Lecture 2: Types of Proposal Writing on Upwork
In this lecture, we’ll break down the different types of proposals you can write based on your experience level on Upwork. Writing a compelling proposal isn’t just about introducing yourself—it’s about positioning yourself as the best fit for the client’s needs.
Two Key Proposal Approaches:
1. For New Freelancers (No or minimal job history)
Generic Job Posts – How to stand out when applying for broad roles like "AI Engineer" or "Software Developer."
Problem-Solving Approach – Crafting proposals that address a specific issue the client is facing.
2. For Experienced Freelancers (5+ completed jobs with 5-star reviews)
Generic Job Posts – Leveraging past work and social proof to win high-quality projects.
Problem-Solving Approach – Using credibility and past results to showcase your expertise and problem-solving ability.
By the end of this lesson, you'll understand how to tailor your proposals based on your experience level, increasing your chances of getting hired. Let's get started! ?
Lecture 3: Proposal Writing for New Freelancers
As a new freelancer on Upwork, getting your first few jobs can be challenging. Without reviews or a track record, applying to generic job posts (e.g., AI Engineer, Software Developer) may not be effective. Instead, I focused on jobs where clients had a specific problem and positioned myself as a problem-solver.
Challenges for New Freelancers:
No reviews = Low trust from clients
Hard to compete for generic job posts
Clients prefer experienced freelancers
Winning Strategy: Solve a Problem in Your Proposal
Instead of just saying, “I can do this job,” I demonstrated my expertise by providing a mini-solution within my proposal.
Example Structure:
Acknowledge the problem:
“I read about your issue regarding [specific problem].”
Offer a potential solution:
“Based on my experience, I believe you could try [brief solution].”
Establish credibility:
“I’d love to discuss how I can help implement this solution.”
By offering value upfront, I built trust with clients, even without reviews. This method helped me land my first few jobs and kickstart my Upwork journey.
Lecture 3: Proposal Writing for Experienced Freelancers
Once you’ve completed at least five jobs with five-star reviews, you gain credibility and a strong Job Success Score (JSS), making it easier to land projects. At this stage, your approach to proposal writing should be more targeted and strategic to maximize efficiency.
Two Proposal Approaches for Experienced Freelancers:
1. Problem-Solving Approach (Client Posts a Specific Problem)
Since you now have a 100% JSS and proven experience, your proposals should highlight past success and a direct solution to the client’s issue.
Structure of the Proposal:
Acknowledge the problem ("I see you're facing an issue with...")
Provide a solution ("From my experience, the best approach would be...")
Add credibility ("I’ve successfully solved similar problems for [past clients].")
Call to action ("Let's discuss how I can implement this for you.")
2. Generic Job Posts (Broad Category Listings)
As an experienced freelancer, you should streamline your proposal process by creating 10–20 tailored proposal templates for different job types within your niche (e.g., ML Development, Software Development, etc.).
Each template should include:
A brief introduction showcasing expertise
A mention of relevant past projects
A flexible structure to personalize key details
By using these strategies, experienced freelancers can apply faster, reduce effort, and maintain a high conversion rate. Let’s explore how to craft these proposal templates effectively! ?
