A brief description of how to get the courses in my Udemy catalog as inexpensively as possible.
My Udemy course catalog.
What now?
For the course overview I simply read the course description. If you've already read the course description, go ahead and skip this lecture. Don't worry, the real meat doesn't start until Lecture 2.
In this lecture you'll learn to use the search box which is located in the upper left hand corner of the course display screen. Search the course catalog for topics of interest such as "powerpoint 2013" or "gardening". Udemy returns all applicable search results a screen at a time. Use the filters on the left side of the search result screen to reduce the number of search results. Click a filter while enabled to disable it.
In this lecture you'll learn how to evaluate the course quality of interesting search results. You'll begin your evaluation by scanning the search results for interesting topics with a large number of high quality reviews. Hovering over a course card will display the number of lectures in the course and the number of hours of video. Click on a course card to display the course description.
Watch the promotional video before expanding and reading the course description. Make note of other courses that people looked at and the quality of the reviews. Next you'll read the course biography to get a sense of the instructor. Finally, you'll make not of other courses by the instructor displayed at the bottom of the screen.
In this lecture you'll learn how to display the course instructor's profile page by hovering over the instructor's name at the top of the course description page and selecting "View Profile". Check out the instructor's biography and see what other courses they teach.
When you find a course that looks interesting and passes your quality review, click the heart in the upper right hand corner of a course card or click "Wishlist" button to the right of the course description page. By clicking these buttons you'll be adding the course to your personal wishlist. Later you can review your wishlist by clicking on your face in the upper right corner of each Udemy page and selecting "My Wishlist" from the pulldown menu. Click the "Revmoe from Wishlist" popup link on a wishlisted course card to remove that course from the wishlist.
Note that some courses include lecture titles that end with a "Preview" button. Press the button to preview any of these lectures for free. Click the "Start free preview" link at the top of the course description on the right to begin a five minute preview of any other lectures in the course.
Note that the Udemy and free coupon sites have changed considerably since the publication of this course. I provide this course for completeness and for whatever pertinent information it may contain. Again, beware that this course is severely out of date. This course is for Brian Jackson completists only.
Hi, my name is Brian. I'm not only a Udemy instructor, I'm a student too.
In this, the beginning of my fifth year with Udemy, I've managed to acquire over 424 Udemy courses.
Now, you may think that I spent a lot of money acquiring so many courses, but you'd be wrong. You see, I obtained most of my courses for free and the rest at ridiculously low prices through the use of coupon codes.
Coupon Codes? What's that?
Don't worry, everything is explained in the course.
In this course I'll show you how to find the best courses at the best prices and then how to get the most out of each course you take.
The course is divided into the following main sections:
Evaluating the Udemy Course Catalog
Never Pay Full Price for a Udemy Course
Getting the Most Out of Your Udemy Courses
And it's all explained in under 2 hours.
Note: If you're in a rush, simply scan the lecture descriptions, which are fairly descriptive, and drop in on any lectures that interest you. Udemy course taking tip #1.
Note on the 2018 Edition:
This course has been newly updated to the 2018 version of the Udemy interface. Additionally, it includes new topics on how to find free courses on Facebook and how to get full and partial course refunds.
Meanwhile, the 2015 Edition is fully intact beginning at Section 7: Lecture 34. Please watch one edition or the other (2018 at 2 hours or 2015 at 1) but not both.
So, if you're ready to Udemy with the best of us then I'm ready to show you the tricks of the trade.
As always, good luck and happy Udemy'ing.
---Brian
