Welcome, here's an overview of the course content and an introduction to your new drum tutor.
First we'll look at how to correctly hold the drum sticks and play rebound strokes with a natural motion. Here we'll take a look at your fulcrum point (where you should grip the stick for optimal balance), arm motion, stick path, and how you should be striking the drum to make the best possible sound.
Now let's get on the pad and start playing. This is your very first backing track, and a simple exercise to make sure you are playing flowing rebound strokes.
Here we speeding things up a little by playing a different subdivision of the beat. You'll listen to the musical effect this has, and bring in your bass drum/foot tap to increase the coordination complexity and feel the pulse. Make sure you can play up to Level 5 whilst tapping your foot or playing the bass drum before moving on to the next exercise.
Your warmup for this section of the course, changing how many rebound strokes we play to create different time signatures. Once you've learnt this warmup you'll have a good feeling for the different pulses we can use in the music we play.
Exactly what is a rudiment, anyway? Here you'll learn what they are and why they are so important to you in everything you play, regardless of what style you play.
The first two foundation rudiments. Almost every other rudiment is made up of these two sticking patterns in one way or another. This is your third backing track "Mixed Singles and Doubles", which you'll need throughout this section of the course. Make sure you can play up to Level 5, whilst tapping your foot or playing the bass drum before moving on to the next exercise.
This is one of those rudiments that seems a lot more scary than it really is, so I've devised a method to make it as simple as possible. A paradiddle is simply a mixture of single strokes and doubles strokes. This exercise will have you playing paradiddles in next to no time. Make sure you can play up to Level 5 with the "Mixed Singles and Doubles" track, whilst tapping your foot or playing the bass drum, before moving on to the next exercise.
Now we get to the fun stuff. In this lecture you'll learn about inversions and gain an understanding of how to create more complicated sticking patterns and increase your drumming vocabulary.
This is an insiders trick for practicing a difficult exercise up to speed as quickly as possible. You can use this method for other exercises in the course.
Things start to get quite tricky now as we explore the reverse paradiddle, the inward paradiddle and the outward paradiddle. These are some quite advanced concepts, but once you have an understanding of these you'll gain great control at the drums and be able to play some complicated sticking patterns. Play these exercises with the "Mixed Singles and Doubles" track, and remember you need to get to level 5, with bass drum or foot tapping, before moving on.
Your fourth backing track of the course. Here we begin putting everything you've learnt so far into one fun practice routine so you can experience changing sticking patterns at speed. This is an awesome exercise for drum set control. Remember to play this with the "Workout #1" backing track and play the bass drum or tapping your foot. Try to get up to level 5 before moving on.
Your final exercise, and fifth backing track of the course. Here you'll learn a different sequence to perform your paradiddle inversions, and begin exploring how these will sound when you play them on different surfaces of the drums. By now you will have excellent control of rebound strokes, you'll be able to perform some complicated sticking patterns, and you will have learnt some different musical forms along the way too. Now you will be able to begin Part 2 of the course, where we look at how create excitement by introducing dynamics into our playing.
Learning to play the drums should be fun, and there is no reason to be overwhelmed with information and rules from the very beginning when all you want to do is play. That's why I have created this course. You'll be playing the drums within minutes, and tracking your progress straight away.
This is an introduction to drumming technique for complete beginners. Although the concepts involved might be sophisticated, there is no reason why they should be presented in a boring humdrum way. That's why all of the exercises in this course are to be played with backing tracks that have been especially written so you can experience how these exercises will be used in your drumming from the very beginning.
Throughout this five part course you will learn the basic hand techniques that are used all the time in drumming and are universal to any style you want to play. These concepts are known and used by all professional drummers, yet they are often overlooked or misunderstood by beginners, or taught too late when bad habits are already engrained.
In Part 1 of the course you will learn:
How to correctly hold the drum sticks
How to grip the sticks using the best balance and motion possible
How to play with natural rebound strokes
The three foundation rudiments: single strokes, double strokes and paradiddles; and how you can create inversions of these to make different sticking patterns
How to play in time with a click track or backing track
How to practice effectively and track your progress
Insider methods for practicing exercises up to speed straight away
Included are 13 exercise routines with 5 different backing tracks to practice along with. These tracks are divided into 7 different speeds (35 tracks in total), providing a fun, musical way to track your progress. All the while you'll be increasing your speed, control and accuracy at the drums.
Once you have completed this course you will have a solid foundation to your drum technique and in a position to learn the more advanced techniques needed in later parts of the course.
I've been teaching the drums for over 10 years, and taken 100's of students through their first steps in making music. This course concentrates on the issues they wanted to know, when they needed to know it, and is the result of years of demonstrating and explaining these concepts in the most easily understandable and actionable way I've found possible.
