Learn to read a seed catalog for tomato varieties with disease resistance codes like HLB and EB, and distinguish hybrids from heirloom types; plan transplant timing and seed pricing.
Choose seeds by days to maturity, noting whether timing starts from transplant or seed, and weigh plant size, flavor, disease resistance, and cold or heat tolerance.
Order seeds early, ideally in January, to avoid sold-out varieties. Plan a spring list and compare suppliers to save on free shipping.
Seed tray size depends on plant type and spacing, not the final container. Explore cell and non-cell trays, with standard sizes such as 1020 (ten by twenty inches) and 10x10.
Record seed type and variety from the seed company, noting hybrids like F1, and label each tray with round red beets or celebrity tomatoes to track germination and transplant timing.

Plant seeds at depths roughly twice the seed diameter for larger seeds; smaller seeds stay shallow, as some require light to germinate and should not be buried, and water gently.
Learn to sow red beet seeds in a 162-cell prop tech seed tray with soil or potting mix, bottom or top watering, and plan thinning based on germination rates.

Learn how soil temperature, moisture, and watering affect seed germination. Optimize drainage, potting mix, and seed-start conditions for reliable sprouting.
Plan your transplant outdoors by checking your last frost date and about two weeks after it, using tools like Old Farmer's Almanac by zip code, while watching the weather.
Select a ripe, disease-free tomato and scoop seeds with gel. Ferment seeds in water for five days, then dry on a paper towel, label variety and date, and store airtight.
Plant peas now using potting mix, make a seed hole, and water; follow the same beets method. Schedule transplant near Saint Patrick's Day, aiming by April 1.
Adjust your seed starting mix when needed, and plant peas deeper than beet seeds, as peas are larger with more energy; smaller seeds can climb more to emerge.
