Raw examples of fry scream (vocal fry scream and fry scream with false vocal folds engagement), false chord scream and yell scream (using fry distortion and false chord distortion)!
If you want to learn how to scream, growl or sing with distortion without pain and frustration, get the Ultimate Extreme Vocals Course and make your vocals tear off the roofs of buildings!
Here are few examples of vocals from my students :)
From this video You can learn what are the 5 main foundations of any kind of extreme vocal technique like fry scream or false cord.
Master them and You will achieve any desired sound in the world of extreme vocals!
These are:
1. Breathing
2. Posture
3. The Breath Support
4. Voice Emission/ Phonation/ Clean Voice
5. DISTORTION (FRY SCREAM, FALSE CORD GROWL and other techniques)
In further videos You will find all necessary information, examples and exercises that will help You to develop them every day!
FRY SCREAM VS FALSE CORD - explanation of the technical differences between each of techniques with presentation of specific examples and sounds.
Now You will easily recognize each technique and learn the essential differences between them and their mechanisms.
Breathing is the very first foundation for every type of singing and screaming.
It is also the most basic process that keeps us alive yet almost the most of people do it wrong.
Learn why and improve Your breathing habits to become better vocalist!
The breath support is "the lever" that helps our throat, larynx and vocal folds with "lifting" heavy, loud and distorted sounds without any discomfort or harm to our voice and vocal folds as well.
We engage our diaphragm not only for breathing - we use it now, along the other muscles like our belly muscles and lower back for balancing the effort that we put into creating specific sounds so our throat and larynx could stay opened and relaxed while phonation.
This material will help you to learn if you properly use the breath support and improve it in case if your technique needed it!
In this video You will find useful and simple exercises (whole training) that will help You to strenghten Your diaphragm, belly muscles and improve Your breathing for better & more powerful screaming/ singing!
Here are the 4 breathing exercises that beside improving your stamina and muscle awaraness, will also improve your breath support and vocals!
For me they are the most important ones and since I started to do them everyday my vocal technique has really improved, especially low growls and fry scream and that's why I decided to record them and put here, so everyone could use them.
From this video You will learn the most important aspects of producing any kind of sounds.
It can be singing, growling, screaming, pig squeal, gutturals - the way that we treat our "clean" voice affects the way we scream.
Our basic vocal habits always begin with our clean sound and impact everything else so our basic voice emission can help us to improve our vocals every day our habits can lead us to the destruction of our own voice.
Every good or really bad vocal habit will be amplified by our extreme vocal technique - so it is good to use healthy and effective habits instead of harmful ones. It all matters.
Vocal onset is basically a way that we begin a phrase.
The way we hit the note/ sound from the very beginning impacts the whole rest of the sound.
If we attack too hard (which is a common mistake especially for beginners) then our voice gets tired quicker due to use of too much force and tension for producing sounds.
Hard onset happens when we want to get too loud without a proper foundations or when we try to hit very high note but our range is not so "stretched" yet to hit it with ease.
If we attack too "soft" then our tone becomes breathy and our voice sounds weaker, quiet which requires from us using more "force".
Aspirated/ breathy onset ends up as a faster fatigue of our voice and a lower quality of sounds that we are making.
Aspirated onset happens when we lack of the proper breath support or we have issue with the closure of our vocal folds or we lower the volume too much.
The most balanced, effortless and effective way to start a phrase is to hit the note with confidence yet not too loud and it is called a "coordinated onset". There is no unnecessary tension in our throat and larynx.
We use enough of the breath support and we have control over the height, power and volume of each sound that we produce with ease and comfort.
More info and ways of how to begin each phrase in a correct, easy and effective way in the video!
Here are some exercises that will help you to set your throat and voice properly before more advanced vocal activity!
1. Opening the throat 0:00 - 4:24
2. Resonance - 4:25 - 6:26
3. Overdrive & Projection - 6:27 - 7:40
In this video I share with You few very helpful exercises that I have learnt during belcanto lessons I took - they serve for the better setting of our voice and opening our throat for singing and as it turns out for screaming as well!
Exercises list:
The "A" exercise - 5:16
The "A-I-A" exercise - 12:12
Vowels and the "A-E-I-O-U-Y" exercise - 17:00
1-2-3-2-1 with the "A setting" - 20:19
In this video You will find effective exercises which can be used as a regular vocal practice or a warm-up before screaming.
Here you have a step by step tutorial of how to learn to sing with the distortion!
That type of distortion is heavier, more intense but easier to learn. In the next lecture I will show you how to learn a little bit more subtle and melodic type of distortion for singing but this one is really helpful for building the solid foundations.
1. The proper placement
2. Sustaining the distortion
3. "Mr. Driller" Exercise
4. Using distortion for singing actual notes and melodies
Here are more exercises for learning and improving the distortion for singing!
The beginning is a little introduction to the compression and the distortion exercises part begins around 4:04.
Here you have a piano backtrack for practicing the distortion!
This video will introduce you the basic ways of how to learn to sing with the distortion!
It's about using the vocal fry combined with our clean voice to create a raspy type of a sound which can be used for rock/ metal type of vocals.
That type of distortion is very subtle, delicate. It's perfect in the beginning but there are more ways delivering more powerful sound of the distortion!
Necessary twang is the most common tool used for amplifying, sharpening and distorting vocals in the rock genre, especially in USA where using twang even in speech is pretty common.
It's also very helpful for learning how to "focus" the airflow while screaming and growling. Another advantage of twang is that it brightens the sound color which is increadibly helpful for learning mid-high and high pitched screaming.
That is why it is a perfect tool for any kind of extreme vocalist - learn more about twang and how to use it from the video!
In this one we take a closer look at the sound color - what is your basic sound color and how to change it at will?
Beside clean vocals, you can easily switch the sound color of your screams and growls. The darker sound color makes our growl sounding deeper and lower than it "really" is, the lighter sound color makes our sound sharper and it seems like it is higher than it is.
Many people tend to go too low for the gutturals or low growls and they suffer from constrictions or breathy tone (especially when they natural voice is higher and lows are not their biggest strength when it comes to singing). Also many people try to go way too high which causes the unnecessary stress and tension on the larynx and vocal folds as well which prevents them from reaching the desired high pitched scream.
Are you the one of them or at least you think so? Check the material and learn more about the sound color and simple ways of how to apply it to the needs of your voice!
This short video will help you to learn more about your current vocal range!
To work on expanding your range, watch and practice with the next 2 videos!
PS It's good to check your range from time to time to see if there is any progress :)
In this video you will learn how to expand your range and sing higher without straining your voice or depend only on the upper register.
To make the exercises more effective and safe for the health of your voice try your best to stick with the rules below:
1. It should be totally comfortable for your voice, neck, throat and larynx. Even if you feel that the exercise is physically demanding for your supporting muscles, it should feel pretty easy to perform and 100% comfortable for your voice.
It's like weight lifting - bench pressing 100kg is physically demanding but if you are strong enough and you have proper technique, it won't feel difficult. Demanding, yes, but not painful and so on.
2. Try your best to hit the notes with the highest precision possible. If you sing too low, it can mean you don't use the breath support properly, if you sing too high, it can mean that you use too high air pressure, too high volume or too much support.
3. Keep the resonance as close as possible to your nose and eyebrews - it will help you to make the sound much lighter and effortless for your larynx which is going to help you sing higher without straining your voice. It can sound ugly within first weeks of doing those exercises but as you get better you can work on the esthetic aspect of your voice.
Alright, so basically those exercises should feel comfortable and almost easy for your voice even if they are physically demanding for your breath support and focus. We want to hit the notes as best as possible and we aim for keeping the resonance close to our nose and the area of our eyebrews.
Remember to write down the last notes you were able to hit with a comfort and good resonance. It will help you to observe your progress in the upcoming weeks and months!
Be gentle to your voice and don't push it! Expanding your vocal rage is a process and it requires time and practice.
Ok, I think that's everything you should know before beginning your practice with the video, good luck!
In this video we learn how can we develop the bottom of our range using our chest voice, opened throat and vocal fry so we could sing and scream lower!
From this video You will learn the principles, mechanisms and examples of the fry scream technique.
Fry scream offers wide variety of styles and sounds that can be achieved by using this technique. It can be growl, scream, whistle register fry scream, pig squeal, gutturals and singing with distortion as well.
Learn the essentials of the fry scream technique from this video!
In this video You will find simple and effective exercises to get & improve your fry scream technique.
Exercises presented in this video are very flexible - You can change the difficulty and make them easier or harder as You like it.
You can record Yourself during the practice - it will help You to hear Your progress, strengths of your vocal technique and the most important things to work on and to improve.
This is a simple "follow along" tutorial to get a fry scream! The exercise is a result of few months of searching and practicing different methods for getting a fry scream during my own vocal practice and working out with my students.
The shorter explanation begins at 10:34
The "follow along" part begins at 12:12
Q&A
"How to actually get from the weaker sounding falsetto with vocal fry to the fry scream noise itself? What is actually changing between the two noises? I don't think I could possibly push any harder from my diaphragm".
When we close our mouth sustaining the same setting (and additionally wrinkled nose if it helps to place the sound properly), we start to increase the support gradually. At the same time the compression start to increase and it happens because of two things.
The first thing is the lower part of our neck (place your fingers on the lower part of the neck and make a sound like some "macho man", like Johny Bravo - "ha"! If you feel that muscles in that lower part of the neck move forward a bit and it is totally comfortable then you do it right, it is called a projection, one of the 3 basic types of the compression, we use it for getting the fry scream. When we overuse those muscles we squeeze our throat and the sound gets blocked so be careful with the amount of the projection you use).
The second thing that happens is shortening of our vocal tract. The vocal tract is the place between our larynx and the soft palate. When it shortens it feels like the soft palate and the back of the tongue come closer to each other.
We can get a similiar sensation when we make a sound like a little cough (almost no sound, very quiet cough), some people tell that it is similiar to a Goofy from Mickey Mouse impression (his laugh).
Additional thing for the high pitched scream is that the sound naturally gets lifted to the level of our nose, forehead or our cheeks, for some people it even goes to the top of the head.
Vocal fry on the top of falsetto or full head voice (falsetto means not full vocal cord connection and the highest male register) ---> gradually increasing support, almost at the same time the back of the tongue and the soft palate come closer to each other and the compression is increasing gradually too ---> all combined together in proper balance creates the fry scream.
Around a month ago while practicing with the one of my students, I decided to try some simple experiment. I asked him if he can start with a basic vocal fry and without any expectations to repeat it each time a little bit higher. After a 4th rep he wasn't doing a vocal fry anymore because it "transformed" into a fry noise.
Later I tried it with another person, then another one and one more. Each of them went from a vocal fry straight to a fry noise. Later it was much easier for them to get a fry scream.
Lifting the vocal fry higher to transform it into the fry is nothing new but to be honest I overlooked that simple but as the experiment shows, an effective method so I decided to record a whole video on that topic.
I hope it will be helpful for you!
Using false vocal folds for fry screaming can deliver more massive and intense sound, especially if you aim for a mid/high, mid or low type of screaming! In this video you will learn how to do it!
Projection is a driving force that can naturally make your screaming fuller, more powerful, confident and easier to control. This exercise will help you to master the art of projection!
In this video You will learn how to use your fry scream for getting a pig squeal technique.
All vocals presented in this video are exhales - inhaled vocals are unhealthy and it is not recommended to use them too often (it is even better to avoid them).
Pig squeal can be achieved easily using exhaled vocals and without straining our voice and vocal folds as well. Learn how to get it from this video!
Here is some update for the course - a new lecture with more exercises for vocal fry and fry scream!
They will help You to get your first screams right or to perform fry scream with more ease and relax when You are already familiar with the technique but struggle with tension in the area of your larynx or throat.
Hope this one will be helpful for You!
Have a great day & practice!
Here you have a few examples of a fry and basic fry scream from my students. I hope that they will be helpful for you!
Here are some very basic examples of vocal fry and fry scream from my students. Hope that they will be helpful for You!
For most of them, these were their first screams done with the proper technique (except the last one which serves as an example of what we should avoid).
Remember so keep up with the proper technique and stay patient during exercises!
In this video, you'll learn the most important aspects of the false cord, with a demonstration and an explanation of the technique. The false cord uses our false vocal folds (vestibular/ ventricular folds) to create distortion - learn how to master it for screams and growls!
Here You have some very simple yet effective exercises to first get and then improve your false cord growl and scream!
From this video You will learn how to use your falsetto or head voice for getting high/ medium/ low pitched screams!
Here You have a short compilation of basic examples of the false cord technique with a simple growl.
These examples represent a sound of a growl for people that have just discovered how to perform false cord without any unnecessary tension and in a healthy manner (after around 1,5 - 2 hours of practising vocals together for the most of them).
It also includes my own vocals after around 1 year of practice.
When it comes to the false cord technique, remember to keep your throat opened and relaxed and use a breath support for each of the sound that You are creating!
Here you have 2 more examples of a raw false cord growl and scream from my students. I hope that they will be helpful for your practice!
This video contains techniques and exercises that will help You to master Your gutturals by using fry scream or false cord.
This lecture is all about changing the pitch of our screams and growls both for fry scream and false cord technique!
The settings for lower and higher sounds, no matter it is growl, scream or just "regular" singing, they are a little bit different and it is good to be aware of that before we will try to scream very high on the exact 1:1 setting like during low growls.
Yell scream is shortly a combination of a hard onset and incorrect aproach to the distortion. It can be heard often on sports events, on concerts when people are shouting or just arguing. People attack the sounds too hard and they want to get very loud but they have no idea how to achieve it in a healthy and efortless manner (ig. they lack of the proper breath support).
It is very forceful and unhealthy "style" when people try to use it for being louder or for achieving distortion and theu lack of technical awareness. This is why yell scream is so infamous and not recommended to practice.
But beside "bad & ugly face", the yell scream has also it's bright side and it is just a clean yell - powerful, well-projected, clean and balanced sound that can help us to improve the volume of our extreme vocal technique.
The only thing is to learn how to get such yell in efortless and comfortable way and then put on it a layer of our distortion such as a growl or scream to get more volume for our vocals.
It requires experience, awareness and of course a good practice but it is worth to do it.
From this video You will learn how to increase the volume of Your scream, raspy singing or growl by using a healthy projection with the clean yell scream.
Here are 3 types of high pitched screams, each of them represents a little bit different setting of the mouth and overall placement, hear the difference!
The 1st one is a compressed false cord with the placement moved towards the soft palate and the back of throat. Also the sound is filled with additional "twang" that improves the projection which helps to sustain pretty much long notes even with the false cord technique which uses more air the fry scream.
The 2nd one is more "opened" sound, the volume is higher, so the intensity is. It is louder yet less "sharp" then the compressed one and a little bit more "breathy" even with the proper vocal folds closure. It also uses the twang but the placement is also moved more on "the masque".
The 3rd one is just a high pitched fry scream. Fry scream is very sharp and compressed which helps to sustain really long sounds (from 30 seconds to even 1 minute).
Fry scream placement is also in the area of the back of throat and soft palate but instead of our false vocal folds, we use our true vocal folds which vibrate in a very fast, chaotic manner and the air that flows in our larynx creates the bubbles that results in getting a fry scream distortion.
Hope it will be helpful for You to recognize your favourite vocalists technique or even your own one or to choose the sound that suits You the best, have a great practice, cheers!
Old school growl is a type of pretty much the first "serious" death metal vocals. It appeared in mid 80's with bands like Possessed, Death, Obituary and early 90's along bands like Pestilence, Asphyx, Cancer, Autopsy.
Guttural, ghoulish types of vocals, pretty much unique sound - get to know how to get it!
In this very short footage you can listen to 3 examples from my vocal students - singing with the distortion after 1,5 month of practice (breathing exercises, relaxing of the jaw and throat, range developement and fry scream practice), 1 month of practice (relaxing of the jaw, throat, larynx, opening of the throat, getting rid of breathiness from the voice and practice of healthy distortion using vocal fry combined with a clean sound) and some savage, animal-like growl from a teenager that is practising vocals for around 5 months (we put much effort in practising breathing, using the breath support and proper setting of the voice, H. is also experimenting much with the tongue shape and position - it helps to get as crazy sound as possible!).
Hope that those examples will be helpful for You!
In this video you will find a bunch of warm-up exercises for your throat, jaw, tongue and face which will improve your overall comfort while singing/ screaming and help to get rid of unnecessary tension that could block your voice!

My name is Matt and since 2016 I help people around the world to learn extreme vocal techniques like screaming or growling in safe, simple and effective ways. There are people from Poland, USA, UK, India, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Italy, China - mostly the viewers of the You Tube channel I grow since 2017 - Sibila Extreme Vocal. Beside 1:1 lessons and my activity on You Tube etc., I also run vocal workshops around the Poland.
Beside that I have recorded 8 albums (and a couple of EP's and songs) with various bands/ projects from Poland and other parts of the world (Vishurddha, Lyktgubbe, Glädje, SoulCarrion, Imperial Sin, Moonthoth, Athvarf and more).
In 2019 I've decided to gather the most important information, valuable knowledge, examples, exercises about every possible extreme vocal technique and began to work on creating a simple, easy to follow and effective program that will help each of you to become a better and more aware vocalist each day❗️
This course is a result of 2 years of researches, organizing and verifying information, developing and testing exercises in practice (also with my students) so it would contain the top notch quality methods and activities that actually work in reality and not "only on a paper"❗️
Here are 5 things you must know to master any kind of vocal technique that almost no vocal coach mentions:
1. Proper posture
2. Breathing technique
3. Breath support
4. Voice emission
5. Vocal effects (grit, scream, growl, compression etc.)
1. Why posture matters so much while doing vocals❓
Posture is important due to how it impacts the way your muscles work - if they are in balance or maybe they are too tight or too relaxed. Besides that, posture affects the way you breathe, determining if it's deep or shallow❗️
2. Why is breathing technique so important❓
If your breathing is shallow, you are going to create extra pressure that works against your vocal folds, which beside causing a discomfort, will also limit your ability to use the breath support correctly and your full vocal range will suffer❗️
It will also quicken your vocal fatigue and make screaming almost impossible or painful to perform due to high air pressure and constrictions in the throat.
A combination of the proper posture and good breathing technique not only helps to avoid unhealthy constrictions and pressure in your body, especially in your throat, but it also makes it much easier to engage your diaphragm (and muscles that surround it) more effectively in order to perform the breath support for performing vocals.
3. What is "breath support"❓
It's an ability to use your diaphragm and deeper muscles in your belly and back that surround it when you perform the vocals, both singing and screaming.
The higher, louder and more distorted vocals you want to create, the more important breath support is.
Solid breath support will help you to keep your throat opened and free from constrictions, helping you to sing and scream with more power, wider range and deeper sound without using too much effort❗️
Breath support is a crucial part of the voice emission.
4. Why is voice emission important even when you only want scream and not do any clean vocals❓
Because, proper voice emission will help you to enrich your natural sound color, develop your vocal range, decrease the effort you put into singing or screaming, find the proper placement for using the compression, screaming and other vocal effects while avoiding any unnecessary tension and pressure in your throat, jaw, neck and larynx!
Having good voice emission doesn't mean you have to become an outstanding singer. Of course, it can help, but you don't even have to sing at all❗️
It's simply about using proper posture, good breathing technique and the support while using your own, unique voice so it would flow free from any kind of obstacles in a naturally powerful and effortless way!
It's much easier then to find a comfortable and best sounding placement for your scream, growl, distortion, gutturals or any other technique that you want to master and to learn faster while keeping your voice completely safe❗️
It's a little bit like building a house - everyone wants their house to be durable, stable and safe so what you do in the beginning is to prepare the ground and set solid foundations. Then you build the walls and the house itself, you connect it to the water and electricity etc.
Now the house is ready for painting the walls, furnishing and decorations❗️
It sounds logical when we talk about building houses but why the most of the vocalists around the world focus at first on the 5th element - screaming, growling etc. ("decorations and furnishment" for the house) when their "foundations and walls" are not there or they are really poor and not reliable❓ How is that possible❓
The Ultimate Extreme Vocals Course is a complete guide that will lead you step by step not only through the world of extreme vocal techniques like Fry Scream, False Cord or Distortion - at first it's going to help you to build safe and solid foundations for your voice so it would be perfectly ready for learning and mastering your desired extreme vocal technique and bring the best from your voice in healthy and effective way❗️
All you need to do is to START and practice with patience and true dedication❗️
Pack some water, put on fire the desire to become the best vocal version of Yourself and let's head out to our vocal adventure❗️
PS I encourage you to make notes of the most important information as you go through the course - it will greatly increase the effectiveness of your practice!

"Out of all the vocal couches I had, Sibila is the best. I have benefited tremendously.. I feel like the individual classes, or the "curriculum", could be a little tidier and shorter. But thats not a big deal at all. I have been personally recommending this course to a lot of singers coming in my studio. Cheers"

"Dude knows what he is talking about. He gives good examples of all the different types of extreme vocals and how to achieve them. He likes the similar extreme music i.e. Death Metal, Black Metal and Thrash Metal. This is the only place on the internet I have found with this amount of in depth extreme vocal teachings. I found it a little easier to get into the course since I had a basic background in singing and understood what he meant with fry screams and he describes false chords well enough. My review may be a little skewed from others as the similar tastes in music and basic understanding of the voice made this course geared especially for me. I would recommend to anyone trying to get into Extreme Metal Vocals."

"Comprehensive, educational and fun! My goal was to develop black/thrash metal vocals and this turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate the course‘s structured approach of explanatory videos, methods, demonstrations and exercices. I found the ‚full workout videos‘ especially helpful in developing my vocals – for a beginner like me, they really take out the guess work in trying to figure out where to start or how to schedule vocal trainings. (...) Furthermore, this course introduced me to other types of vocals I‘d never thought would be for me (raspy vocals; old school growls; yell scream; etc.), but now I‘m really thinking about expanding my horizon and seeing where my voice takes me :) Matt is a great instructor, very professional and clearly knows what he‘s talking about. Practicing growls and screams has been frustrating for me at times, but Matt‘s sense of humour and his supportive attitude really keeps me going and helps me to get over myself ;) It‘s evident that he put a lot of effort and heart into this course and I can wholeheartedly recommend it for any metalhead dreaming about becoming a vocalist!"
