Learn to transform raw sales data into actionable insights for supply chain and marketing using Tableau, with a mock consulting project, dimensions, and a final exam.
Define the dataset and download Tableau Public, then explore how the client uses sales per store across all 50 states to inform marketing campaigns and supply chain decisions.
Learn how to download the free Tableau Public version. Install steps include entering your email, accepting the license terms, and locating Tableau Desktop Public.
Connect Tableau to the raw Excel data file and explore geo data for regional sales and stock percentages. Analyze time series data to plan inventory and prevent stock outs.
Explore dimensions and measures in Tableau using a bucket analogy to show how sales, a measure, varies across states. Uncover trends by comparing states such as North Carolina and Florida.
Learn to use dimensions to uncover actionable insights, moving beyond total sales to state-level trends, store-count adjustments, and store velocity by color for East Coast and border states.
Explore seasonality by using dimensions to uncover insights and trends in Tableau, illustrated with a client selling bathing suits showing high summer demand and low winter demand.
Learn to uncover seasonality in sales using a continuous timeline in Tableau, then layer inventory on the same axis to support demand planning.
Build an interactive dashboard by combining a KPI chart, a regional sales analysis, and a line graph, leveraging Tableau for reporting.
Create a kpi chart by dragging sales, average inventory on hand, and in stock percentages onto the workspace; format as currency and calculate the average in stock percentage.
Calculate store velocity, defined as sales divided by store count, and build a regional heat map with a blue-orange diverging scheme, currency formatting, and a single-value slider filter.
Build a connected dashboard that filters all visualizations using the assortment dimension, integrating a KPI chart and GM map with demand planning for synchronized insights.
Learn visual analytics best practices for dashboards that show KPI trends, sales by state, and time-based sales. See why simple bar charts and interactivity beat cluttered visuals and pie charts.
Engage in exploratory analysis with Tableau to answer five specific dataset questions. Follow a guided walkthrough and publish your dashboard on Tableau Public for a CV-ready reveal.
Using Tableau, this final exam review demonstrates quickly slicing and dicing data to answer targeted questions on 2017/2018 sales, q4 electronics, texas sales, red items, and phone inventory.
Upload your formatted dashboard to Tableau Public to publish a KPI dashboard and develop a body of work for Tableau developer roles.
Do you have large sets of sales data that you'd like to better understand?
In this course we will work through a sample consulting engagement where our client needs to better understand their sales data so they can more effectively plan for the upcoming year. It has been my experience that learning Tableau is much easier when I have a specific problem to solve which is why I structured this course around a very specific use case. This course is perfect for both business owners looking to glean insights into their business and those looking to build Tableau acumen so they can land a Tableau job!
Use Tableau to Analyze and Visualize Sales Data To Develop Actionable Insights
Visualizing current and historical sales data can result in huge insights that aren’t
readily apparent in the day to day grind. The right visualizations help quickly identify trends and
outliers (positive or negative), which help to adjust course for more profitable sales & marketing
as well as a more efficient and informed supply chain.

Contents and Overview
Throughout this course we will work through a sample consulting engagement where the client wants us to conduct a data discovery on their sales data. They need help planning for the upcoming year both in their marketing department and also their supply chain. We will use their raw sales data to come up with insights for both teams.
This project will focus our approach to Tableau forcing us to learn the basics while solving a real world business problem. My hope is that you’ll feel like you’re learning a new problem solving tool not just a series of functions in a software interface. Each subject that I cover builds on the previous section and accomplishes a specific task in accomplishing our goal of analyzing our client’s sales data.
