Let's set up our space for ease and success.

Requirements

  • A paint shirt, acrylics will stain clothes. One 8 by 10 canvas. One small palette knife that comes to a nice point. Acrylic paints: black, white, brown and at least three other colors of their choice for the background, I used the rainbow for mine :) Masking tape, or painters tape, either works. Palette paper (or a foam plate works) Paper towels, and a bowl of water.

Description

We will learn to paint with a palette knife using acrylics on canvas.  I will be using a 16 by 20 canvas but feel free to use whatever size that you prefer. Make sure to adjust your picture if you decide to trace the outline onto the canvas. Please refer to the video inside the lesson on how to achieve this if you are unfamiliar with the process. We will create a lovely trillium and make it pop with bright background colors.  I recommend a smaller knife as it is easier to control the paint while using it.  We will learn to create the flower petals first by using the knife to blend colors just enough to define each one. The palette knife will help to add texture to the painting that a paint brush simply cannot. We will play with blending colors in the background.  Here is where I will encourage creativity and hope you will experiment with your own color choices. This painting is very forgiving so I recommend choosing colors that you like in order to be happy with the background. I typically give enough instruction to get the student started and comfortable with the medium and make sure we have time to explore and get creative.
