Description

This course provides learners with a practical and ethical foundation in the training of animals housed in captive or managed care environments. Designed for individuals working or aspiring to work in animal care facilities, wildlife rehabilitation centres, zoos, or sanctuaries, this course equips learners with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to understand and apply basic training techniques with confidence and care.

Throughout the course, learners will explore fundamental methods such as targeting, operant conditioning, and positive reinforcement. Emphasis is placed on the development of ethical training philosophies that prioritise the welfare and psychological well-being of animals. Learners will develop the ability to evaluate animal behaviour during and after training sessions, assessing how animals respond to various stimuli, training styles, and the presence of the trainer.

The course also focuses on interpreting behavioural feedback and making appropriate adjustments to improve training effectiveness. Learners will be guided in reflecting on their own attitudes, communication styles, and interaction with animals to ensure humane, respectful, and efficient training practices.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply foundational animal training techniques.

  • Evaluate animal behaviour and responsiveness to training.

  • Adjust training methods based on animal feedback.

  • Demonstrate awareness of ethical and welfare considerations.

  • Reflect critically on personal performance and training outcomes.
