Hello! I'm Mai Hoang, freelance journalist, Climate Tracker member from Vietnam, and...
Welcome to Climate Tracker's first Train-the-Trainer course!
So excited to have you here. As mentioned on the course landing page, this course has been designed to cover most basic journalism skills—pitching, article-framing, interviewing, data visualization, and more—in the context of human-interest climate journalism. In addition to helping you become an effective trainer, we also have modules that deal with the logistics of holding a workshop, offline or online.
The materials are thus divided into 3 sections:
1. Skills Training: Climate Journalism Staples
2. Content Training: Making the Climate-human Link
3. Logistics: Planning the Workshop
As the course's instructor, I will walk you through most of the presentations in this course—except for those on Data Visualization (lecture 8) narrated by Chris Wright. However, the materials we'll be using is a compilation of many many Climate Tracker staff's brainchild—Ignacio Amigo, Dizzanne Billy, Chris Wright, Anna Perez Catala, Arthur Wyns and more. I would like to thank all of them for the incredible content.
So with that, watch this short intro video to know more about Climate Tracker and this course!
What is climate journalism? How can one become a climate journalist? Lay out the basic questions and effectively answer them for your workshop participants.
Though framing a story may be second-nature to more experienced writers, there are multiple nuances that come with the climate change topic. This presentation is a staple for any climate journalism training, and can be modified depending on the skillsets of participants.
Now that your participants have nailed the basics, it's time to get creative! In this day and age, basic competency with using data visualization tools is absolutely necessary. Walk your participants through the most widely-used ones. Keep in mind that for the inexperienced user, navigating these sites may take some time. See how much time you need to complete the activities, and multiply that by 1.5.
Lecture delivered by Chris Wright.
How can one be a fair journalist and advocate for climate action? A nuanced topic and must-have staple for any climate journalism training, however basic or advanced! Let's explore this via a presentation and an interactive activity.
One of the most wide-spread and debilitating impacts of climate change will be on human health. What are some of these linkages and how can journalists report on them effectively? Watch this module and try out the interactive activity to become a confident trainer on health and climate writing.

Climate Tracker conceived our Train-the-Trainer initiative in order to:
Convert our workshop resources into replicable modules.
Empower qualified journalists to deliver trainings on key climate journalism topics.
Establish a certification process for journalists who wish to be hired as speakers/trainers/facilitators.
With the current surge in wildfires, cyclones, and infectious diseases, a key topic for journalists to understand in this year and beyond is how to highlight the human-interest story behind climate change.
