Primal Movement exists among animals and humans
Observing a monkey swinging from a tree or a lion attacking leaping towards it's prey, you may notice how smooth and powerful the movements are.
Primal Movement requires strength, mobility, and stability, and thus performing primal movements will increase your strength and flexibility.
Primal Movement is not only a great exercise for strength, but also it is functional. It allows us to do basic physical tasks without fear of injury.
All of the movements you do by cleaning your household, washing your car, or carrying groceries, will all be easier with a basic understanding of Primal Movements.
Today, humans no longer must hunt outside for food. Our more sedentary lifestyle causes problems, as often we suffer lower back pain, shoulder pain, and knee pain. We go to the doctor for medicine, pay for different surgeries, buy expensive braces and beds without addressing the primary cause. Sedentary lifestyle.
We no longer move in complex and fluid fashion.
With all that modern society has brought us, we have lost touch with our roots of movement. Primal Movement is the answer. This movement will reconnect us with our roots as human beings.
When I started wrestling, I was young and inexperienced. I trained like a bodybuilder, hoping to get stronger.
Dissapointment struck my senior year. Practicing throwing my opponent before a major wrestling tournament, my shoulder was brutally dislocated. The following months and years were filled with shoulder issues.
From the age of 17 until the age of 23, I experienced:
4 dislocations
1 shoulder surgery
6 months of physical therapy
23 more dislocations
I am in no way knocking surgeons or physical therapists. They told to never to box, wrestle, or play competitive sports again. However a guy as competitive as me... how can I stop doing the sports I love?
I knew something had to change.
I had to stop training completely OR rethink how I was training.
After a dislocated shoulder in Brazil ended my aspiring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu career at 23 years old, I made some significant changes.
1. Reducing my exercise intensity
I started focus less on exerting myself, and more on proper movement
2. Increased attention to flexibility and mobility
Started stretching before and after exercise, every day
3. Increased attention to core strength and stability
Learned how to stabilize my core and shoulder muscles
4. Perfected different athletic movements
Stopped with bodybuiliding type training more than 1x a week, started training running, jumping, swinging, and lifting with proper technique.
5. Cross training different sports and activities.
Different sports reduces repetitive wear and tear on my joints. I avoid hitting strength and muscle plateaus, and I keep exercise fun by mixing it up
One of my favorite ways to mix it up is with Primal Movements
These movements work on my flexibility and strength, and don't require any weights. They can be incorporated into any work out, and they challenge my whole body.
Welcome to Primal Movements.
Follow along and do this warm up each day before exercising
This is your second part of the warm up, follow along
Final part of the warm up. Master these 3 elements!
Engage your scapula
Squeeze those shoulder together, and keep your elbows in tight
Make sure you hinge by
Bringing your hips back and down
Don't bob your head, keep your movement limited to just your hips
by only moving your legs to the side. Keep your core tight.
Your back should be flat the whole time
Hands below your shoulders, knees below hips
Start with your hands below your shoulders, bring you ankle towards your butt, then towards the opposite hand, then transfer into crab position as shown in the video. Rinse and repeat.
Hands a bit lower than push up position, push through your palms and bend your knees, then return with your butt tight and tucked and back arched as shown
From squat position, near hand to floor, stick the near leg straight forward, and press up, before returning to the other side.
This is push up position walking without bending elbows or knees. Just move using the flexion of your ankles and shoulders
Push up position
Instead of regular push-up bring your knee to same side elbow as you walk with your hands
