    Introduction

Hello, I'm excited to have the opportunity to bring you this highly specialized course about mental performance techniques and how they can help you excel in your field. Throughout the years, I’ve had the privilege to have worked with many world-class high-performing individuals and teams, including top training pilots and other aviation and aerospace professionals around the world, and have observed firsthand the power of focus, dedication, and resilience when it comes to achieving excellence in this field.

I’ve also witnessed and experienced firsthand the unique challenges and stressors that come with working in the aviation and aerospace industries. Jetlag, time away from home, uncertainty, operational issues, commercial concerns, high-pressure situations, and the need for constant attention to detail while balancing your personal and profession lives can all take a toll on your mental and physical wellbeing. It’s vital to consider your overall wellbeing when pursuing excellence and improving your performance. The management of mental health and wellbeing while on and off duty needs to be considered a vital safety behavior. By taking care of your mental and physical health, you will be better equipped to handle the challenges that come with your profession. There is a need for more supports and resources focused on this area and until the airlines and aerospace companies provide more robust supports the pilots and astronauts are left to manage these elements themselves, “… research has led to evidence-based recommendations for interventions to promote wellbeing (including positive mental health and mental wellbeing) in the workplace, both at an airline level and pilot self-management level (including while on and off duty). Overall, airline organizations might increase their support for preventative mental health treatment and supporting pilot training in relation to adopting healthy behaviors, using specific coping strategies, and risk identifying behavior. (Cahill et al, 2020) ...” [1]

This course helps address those needs, and throughout this course, I will share with you some of the best evidence-based insights, practices, and tools I’ve learned over three decades to help you achieve excellence and improve your performance, all while prioritizing your wellbeing. From techniques to enhance your focus and concentration to strategies for managing stress and building resilience, I will provide you with actionable steps to take your performance to the next level and to enjoy the lifestyle in a healthier and more balanced way. I am continually surprised to find a general lack of information and accessible resources on the mental health and wellbeing aspects of work and lifestyle. It was always just assumed that pilots and astronauts, air traffic controllers and ground personnel simply are born with professionalism and cool calm confidence in their DNA. That they are all simply the right stuff, cut from a different cloth. I’m here to tell you that in my observation this simply is not true; industry professionals are just as human and normal as anyone else, and it is through the highest quality of training and education that the best in the world learn to perform with excellence. Top professional traits are not innate qualities that some people are just born with. They can be developed through intentional and deliberate practice Even those with natural talents and abilities still had to work hard on maintaining wellbeing. They were not born that way, and it takes constant focus and hard work to maintain the quality of professionalism and attention to detail that makes them world class. I can confidently say that the approach in this book is very different to any other out there. I will provide you with practical tools and techniques to help you achieve a state of peak performance and wellbeing and how to operate at the highest levels of professionalism. This book is something of an industry first in the way it deals with this subject. We will explore techniques for managing stress and anxiety, and strategies for building resilience and coping with setbacks. My goal is to help you become the best version of yourself, both in your professional and personal life. By combining the latest research with real-world experience, I firmly believe this book will be an invaluable resource for anyone looking to achieve excellence in the aviation and aerospace industries or for those interested in pursuing careers in the field.

Our thinking patterns play a crucial role in achieving excellence. That is why this book places a great emphasis on the topic of better thinking. We delve into the different types of thinking that are necessary to excel in this field, including analytical, creative, and critical thinking. We also explore the common thinking traps and biases that can lead to poor decisions and performance and how to avoid folly, misjudgment, and misguidance. Ultimately, the goal of this book is to provide aviation and aerospace professionals with the mental tools and strategies they need to achieve peak performance and excellence, while also promoting their overall well-being and mental health. By doing so, we can ensure that the future of the industry is in good hands, and that we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in aviation and aerospace. As someone who has dedicated a lot of time and effort to the study and application of practical and positive psychology, I'm incredibly excited to be able to combine that passion with my love of aviation and aerospace. I truly believe that this book and course will help you to achieve excellence in your careers, and to strive to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. We all know that the world we live in can be incredibly challenging, with constant pressures and demands pulling us in different directions. If you are struggling with mental health issues, it is vital to seek assistance from your trained medical professional, doctor and to engage with qualified experts with evidence-based approaches to help you. This book is to help guide you and provide you with tools and options to assist you on your journey in wellbeing and should not be approached as a substitute to those resources, but rather as a supplement. With the right tools and techniques, we can all learn to be resilient in the face of adversity, and to perform at the highest standards of professionalism, excellence, and safety. And that's exactly what this book is all about. I know that many of you have chosen careers in aviation and aerospace because you're passionate about making a difference in the field, about pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and about being part of this extraordinary and dynamic industry. I believe that this book will help you to do all those things and more and I'm honored to be able to play a small part in that journey.
