What you'll learn
  • Understand the benefits and advantages of linear projects scheduling
  • Planning and scheduling linear infraestructural projects
  • Controlling projects with TILOS
  • In order to learn to manage TILOS, you will only need the "demo" version, which is entirely free. If you do not have it, there is no problem, because within the first lessons you will be taught to unload and install it.

Description of the course

For years, linear project schedulers have had as support different tools not designed to schedule and control projects as highways, pipe lines, railways, transmission lines, etc.. They have been using softwares such as Excel, Autocad or even CPM solutions, without good results.

Today, we have TILOS (Time Location System), an exclusive application to schedule linear projects. This software is based in time-location diagrams, also known as linear scheduling method, time chainage, march chart, line balance or french diagram, according to the country where the user is located.

TILOS is the most recognized software all over the world to schedule these type of projects; therefore, learning it means to obtain a specialization well considered by companies which use this as a standard tool in their projects.

With more than 10 years of experience as a trainer in project controls and 20 as a professional related to this field, I assure you that by the end of the course you will be able to develop yourself with this tool in an efficient way.

What do you get?

  • HD quality videos, access 24/7
  • Selection of subjects, and a practical and didactic training, from an instructor who uses the software everyday in real projects, and not only a theoretical teacher.
  • Workshop following the entire project, not isolated topics
  • Post training support, via e-mail, to clarify any doubt

You will know what Time-Location diagrams are, the heart of Tilos. Theoretical concepts and a first approach to the software.

You will also understand why traditional softwares are useless to linear projects and why Tilos is a specially designed tool for these kind of projects.

+ The basics in Tilos
2 lectures 10:43

Before to start operating the software , you must be familiarized with some basic concepts, as cells systems or how they interact among them.

Basic concepts

In this lesson, you will be able to create a project or a project template, which will be the basis for entering tasks.

Creating a project
+ Tasks
5 lectures 28:08

Tasks are not the only objects we can insert in Tilos. In this lesson you will learn to insert other kind of objects in the projects.

Types of objects

You will learn how to create linear tasks to plan your project, in a very intuitive way.

Tasks creation

Linear tasks can be displayed by several types of graphics. Here you will see the different interpretations your graphics could have.

Activity display types

In Tilos you can calculate tasks through a variety of methods. For instance, you can calculate a task duration according to its volume and performance.

Task calculation

Adding tasks in Tilos is not about adding lines on a blank sheet. We can use standard templates for our projects, with a different meaning for each of them. You will learn how to create your own tasks according to your specific project.

Task editing
+ Tasks groups

Linking tasks in Tilos is very easy and intuitive. Let me teach you some tips I've learned over the years, which sometimes are not being considered by the users.

Linking tasks

When we talk about linear activities, we are always going to work with repetitive activities; therefore it is important to know how to group tasks that will be used in other stages of the project. Grouping tasks saves a lot of time when scheduling projects.

Task groups

As in many other softwares, in Tilos you can add milestones. However, they must be treated in a very specific way. I will show step by step how to create and manage these activities.

Milestones creation

Linear projects have activities with a sole location, that is why creating located activities is a must. In Tilos we call these activities "stations" or stationary tasks, and they must be inserted in a particular way.

In this lesson I will teach you some hints for a better presentation.

Stationary tasks

In traditional CPM softwares we are familiarized in using time lags. In Tilos, due to linearity feature of the projects, we can also use distance lags.

For instance, for a task we can schedule it to begin after its successor has advanced 200m; amazing, isn't it? The ones who have ever planned a highway construction would understand this. Everybody will understand the concept and use of distance lag after this lesson.

So far, we should talk about a project that will be developed through further lessons. I explain here the plan step by step, as you will do projects in real life. I have chosen a piping project, but actually it is applicable to any other linear projects.

Pipeline project description

One of the biggest advantage of this software, is that activities could be synchronized to any site map, which makes our plan a visual tool, easy to understand for everyone in the project team.

Tilos is not just a space-location diagram. In this lesson, we will see how possible it is to have several types of views in your project, including Gantt chart.

+ Scales and profiles
5 lectures 23:03

In this lesson you will learn how to create and manage time scales. In Tilos, it is the user who create and change the time scale according to the need.

Time scales

The distance scale is the heart of Tilos. Here you will learn to manage these type of scales in an accurated way

Distance scales

After this lesson, you will be able to define specific locations in your distance scale, which means along your whole project. In other words, you will be able to point out a river, a warehouse or any important place in the project.

Distance profiles

Not all tasks perform as a perfect line. Many times there are sections when the performance increases or decreases. In order to schedule this, you must use speed profiles.

Speed profiles

Knowing how to work with grids of the time-location diagrams is very useful for a better plan´s display.

+ Calendars
3 lectures 14:46

Creating a calendar in Tilos is very easy. However, there are some details that can confuse the user a little bit. Don't you worry because at the end of the lesson you will master this subject and it will not be a problem anymore.

Creating a calendar

Once a calendar is created, you can assign it to the different tasks in Tilos. Doing this is very easy; besides, you can find here my own tips, which I guarantee you, will be of great help.

Assigning calendars to tasks

If the tasks have calendars, then the independent cells that the software contains, too. Although cell calendars do not vary the calculation of the task, they are of great influence to the plan display.
