Learn about the different parts of the violin and what happens when we draw the bow on the strings.
In this lecture you will learn the parts of the violin and the bow, and the way we create sound.
1. Parts of the violin
strings
bridge
top and back plate – the body
sound post – the wooden stick inside the violin connecting the top and back plates
f-holes – the holes on the top plate shaped as the letter F
fingerboard – the black wooden piece on top of the violin on which we place our fingers
nut – the small piece of hard material supporting the strings at the end of the fingerboard
scroll
tuning pegs – used to tune the four open strings
fine tuners – located on the tailpiece, used to fine-tune the string to the correct pitch
tailpiece – keeps the strings attached at the bottom part of the violin
2. Parts of the bow
wooden stick
frog – the part where the bow is held
tip – the top part of the bow where the bow hair is attached
bow hair – coated in rosin for better friction
screw – controls the tension of the bow hair. Don’t forget to loosen the hair each time you put the violin away!
The sound on the violin is produced in two ways – when the string is either plucked (pizzicato) or bowed (arco). When we push and pull the bow over the string, we make the string vibrate.
We change the pitch of the sound by pressing the string to the fingerboard.
