The Amazing origins of the Nordic Gods and the 'Nordic' culture. See that they might not originally be Nordic at all, as we explore their sagas and other historic narratives, place names, DNA, and cultural perspectives.
Students will see that the migrations of the Viking Gods, and the people who believed in them, may have led to a 'first Nordic assault' in the East, followed centuries later by the actual Vikings themselves. They will see the surprisingly extensive trading network, created through heroic effort, the rise of Russia and the parts of Scandinavia that were involved.
In this section students will see that the 'Viking' assault on the West was in two distinct phases. The first was just after the collapse of Roman Britain and the incursion and conquest of the Angles and Saxons, an early 'Viking' culture that believed in the same gods as those Vikings who will then come into the story, still here in part one.
As the lecture continues, students will see the incredible assault on France, with several cities captured, or buying their safety. They will see the continued raiding on England, the creation then of two countries on the landscape. They will see the significant Viking impact on Ireland and its society. They will also be shown the Viking 'conquest' of the North Atlantic, that saw Viking communities on Iceland, Greenland and Vinland - North America, and quite possibly beyond!
Students will see the home culture of Scandinavia during the Viking Age, and aspects which have influence still today, plus notable impacts in the West, and ongoing features.
In this last lecture Students will be exposed to more of the magical beliefs of the Norse, particularly with regards to the Runes, their form of alphabet. But unlike other alphabets, this was used in divination, and magic. Students will be give a brief overview, in hopes of inspiring further research into the Runes, Tarot and other mystical branches. May the learning go onward!
The Vikings are a fascinating group from our Western History, who's impact endures still to this day. In English, we use their words, and name their gods, almost daily. But who were they, really, and where did they originate? The answer to this is quite surprising and we will leave Scandinavia and find it in Central Asia! Their impact was significant and predates their supposed beginning by several hundred years as that original migration, and the affects of it created ripples throughout the Mediteranean, the Roman Empire and then Germania and Britannia. In a time of challenging survival, the Vikings introduced their own form of brutality that surpassed that of others. We will see why. They sailed over thousands of miles of sea, with skills still not fully known and spread their culture from North America to Central Asia and Constantinople. We will see all of this, plus a look at the culture they had in their Nordic base, the strength of their women and their culture of blood. We will look at the Runes, much more than symbols of their language but a system of fortunetelling, and symbols of power. And lastly we will look at Ragnarok, the fabled twilight of the Gods.
