Welcome to The Ultimate Web Design Course for beginners, where you'll embark on a transformative journey to create your very own professional online presence.
If you're a business owner just starting out, feeling daunted by the complexities of web design, and strapped for cash to hire professionals, you're in the right place. We're here to guide you through the process, break down the barriers, and empower you to craft a stunning website that converts visitors into loyal clients.
Whether you are a service-based entrepreneur or coach with immense potential but limited technical knowledge or a virtual assistant looking to enhance your skill set, you're not alone. Many in the same boat have transformed their businesses by embracing the digital world. I’m here to help you bridge the gap between your incredible expertise and the online arena.
In today's digital age, your website is your virtual shop front, your 24/7 salesperson, and your brand ambassador. It's often the first impression potential clients have of your business. My goal is to equip you with the tools to create a website that radiates professionalism, credibility, and trustworthiness. Don't let the tech overwhelm you – I’m going to give you the exact process that I use when designing professional websites that convert to paying clients by breaking it down step by step.
So, are you ready to transform your business's online presence? Let's dive in!
Before diving into the nitty-gritty of design, let's clarify what you want your website to achieve. Is it a platform to showcase your services, engage with clients, or even sell products? I'll walk you through the process of defining your website's purpose, ensuring every design decision aligns with your business goals.
In this lesson, I’m going to help you define the purpose and goals of your website. Your website's role is more than just an online presence; it's a dynamic extension of your business that can drive engagement, conversions, and growth. By the end of this lesson, you'll have a crystal-clear understanding of what you want your website to achieve.
Imagine your website as a versatile tool that can accomplish various objectives. Do you aim to showcase your expertise, services, or portfolio to potential clients? Perhaps you're eager to foster a direct line of communication with your audience through engaging content and contact forms. And don't forget the potential to sell products or courses directly from your site. Each of these goals requires a tailored approach, and that's what I’m here to guide you through.
ou don't need to be a tech guru to succeed in this course, it is not designed to teach you how to be a technical web designer. The main purpose of this course is to help you with the design aspects. However, it is important that you understand some of the fundamental terminology used in web design so that if you stumble across it, you’ll not feel like you’ve hit a wall and don’t know how to move forward.
Key Terminology
1. Domains: A domain is your website's address on the internet, like www.yourbusinessname.com. It's how people find and access your site. Picking a memorable domain is a step toward establishing your unique online identity.
2. Hosting: Imagine hosting as your website's home on the internet. Web hosting companies provide the server space that keeps your site live and accessible to visitors.
3. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language): This is the building block of web pages. Think of it as the structure that defines how content is organised. HTML uses tags to label different elements like headings, paragraphs, images, and links.
4. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets): CSS is your design tool. It's responsible for how your website looks – from colours and fonts to layout and spacing. It brings your content to life visually.
5. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation): SEO enhances your website's visibility on search engines like Google. It involves optimising content, keywords, and technical aspects to attract organic traffic.
In this lesson, I’m going to discuss the significance of choosing the right domain name for your website. Your domain name is not just an address; it's the virtual front door to your online business. We’ll explore why your domain name matters and how it plays a crucial role in shaping your brand identity.
Your domain name is the first impression visitors have of your website and business. It's like the shop sign that draws them in. A well-chosen domain name communicates professionalism, trustworthiness, and relevance to your ideal client. It's also memorable, making it easier for people to find and return to your site.
Consider your domain name as a reflection of your brand and what you offer. It's an opportunity to instantly convey what your business is about. A domain that aligns with your business name or industry helps visitors immediately understand your focus. For example, if you're a fitness coach, a domain like "FitLifeCoaching(dot)com" is clear and resonates with your services.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Domain Name:
1. Relevance: Does your domain name reflect your business or industry?
2. Memorability: Is it easy to remember and spell?
3. Length: Shorter names are generally easier to recall
4. Avoiding Copyright Issues: Ensure your domain name isn't trademarked by another entity
5. Hyphens and Numbers: Hyphens and numbers can be confusing when spoken aloud or remembered. They often lead to mistakes in typing the domain.
6. Unintended Meanings: Words can have different meanings in various cultures or languages. Research to avoid unintended connotations.
Your domain name is a digital asset that stays with your business, so choose wisely. In the following lessons, we'll guide you through brainstorming ideas and registering your chosen domain name.
Here are three other prominent domain name providers:
1. Namecheap
2. GoDaddy
3. Domain
In this lesson, I want to discuss the vital role that hosting platforms play in your online journey. Think of hosting as the home for your website's files, where they're stored and made accessible to visitors. By the end of this lesson, you'll be equipped with the knowledge to choose a hosting platform that serves as a sturdy foundation for your website.
There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a hosting platform, namely:
1. Performance, Speed, and Uptime
2. Scalability for Future Growth
3. Customer Support and User-Friendliness
There's a range of hosting providers out there, each offering various features and plans. Some of the popular hosting providers include:
1. WordPress
2. SquareSpace
3. Showit
4. New Zenler
Different hosting providers offer various plans with different features and pricing structures. Take time to compare:
- Disk space and bandwidth allocations.
- Number of websites you can host.
- Additional features like email accounts and security measures.
A professional email not only enhances your brand's credibility but also fosters trust among your clients and partners. In this lesson, I will guide you through the process of creating a domain-linked email address and the benefits it brings to your online presence.
Your email is a crucial touchpoint for communication with clients, customers, and partners. Establishing a professional email address that uses your domain name (e.g., yourname@yourbusiness.com) speaks volumes about your business's legitimacy and professionalism. It's a subtle but impactful way to convey trust and credibility in the digital realm.
There are several email service providers available, and two popular options are G Suite (now Google Workspace) and Microsoft 365. These providers offer not only email services but also a suite of productivity tools like cloud storage, calendars, and document collaboration. Consider features, integration with your workflow, and pricing when making your choice.
Beyond the polished appearance, a professional email address comes with tangible benefits such as:
- Enhanced Branding and Trust
- Improved Organisation and Collaboration
In this lesson, I want to cover the fundamental principles and best practices of web design. It's essential to understand that your website is a platform to connect with your ideal audience, not merely a digital showcase for your business.
By the end of this lesson, you'll have a clear understanding of how to optimise your website's design to engage your audience effectively and keep them exploring.
I’ll cover the following in the video:
Prioritise clarity
Use high quality visuals
A clear call to action (CTA)
Font sizing, line height and alignment - Use this helpful checker to get the best spacing: Golden Ratio Typography
Reading patterns
Accessibility
How to optimise page speed - I recommend using tinypng for images and downloading Handbrake for your laptop to compress videos
Legal Compliance - Do a search for your own country, but here is an example of a website that will help you create the terms etc. that you need: Rocketlawer
These principles, when applied, will guide you toward creating a website that not only looks good but also engages effectively with your audience.
Your home page is the virtual front door to your online presence, and in this lesson, I will help you to create a captivating first impression.
The primary purpose of your home page is to:
Engage Visitors: Capture their attention and make them want to explore further.
Convey Your Brand: Communicate your brand's essence and values.
Offer Information: Provide a clear summary of who you help, what you help them with, how you can help them, and why you’re the best person to help them.

This workbook will help you craft compelling copy using the StoryBrand/Hero's Journey formula, ensuring your message resonates with your audience and draws them into your brand's narrative.
The purpose of the "About Me" page on your website is to establish a meaningful connection with your audience and build trust. This page offers visitors a window into your world, providing insight into who you are, what you stand for, and why you're uniquely qualified to help them.
A good ‘About Me’ Page will:
Build Trust
Showcase Expertise
Connect Emotionally
Differentiate Yourself
Encourage Action
Answer "Why You?"
Offer Value
The "About Me" page is not just a biography; it's a strategic element of your website that helps you connect with your audience, establish authority, and ultimately, convert visitors into loyal clients or followers. It's your chance to make a memorable first impression and leave a lasting impact.

The Services Page on your website serves as a digital showroom where you present the core offerings of your business to the world. Its primary purpose is to inform and engage your visitors, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the solutions you offer. This page is where you transition from simply introducing your brand to demonstrating its tangible value.
It is a key element in the conversion process, where curious visitors convert into paying clients by:
Enhancing Clarity and Understanding
Establishing Credibility and Trust
Improving Conversion Rates
Strengthening Brand Identity

In this lesson, I’m going to delve into the art of crafting a long-form sales page that's not only persuasive but also conversion-focused. These pages are ideal for promoting your high-ticket offers or courses.
You may want to consider creating a dedicated sales page for each key offer instead of having a general ‘Services Page’, directing your audience straight to the heart of your value proposition.
A well-constructed sales page can offer numerous benefits for your business:
Effective conversion tool
Highly targeted
Enhanced communication
Builds trust
24/7 availability
Cost effective
Scalability
Data driven optimisation
Educational
Consistency
Saves time
In summary, a well-designed sales page is a versatile and invaluable asset for any business. It serves as a highly focused, 24/7 salesperson, capable of reaching a global audience, building trust, and guiding visitors toward taking specific actions. With the ability to communicate targeted messages, address objections, and provide detailed information, sales pages not only enhance conversion rates but also save time and resources.
By optimising and scaling these pages, businesses can effectively promote their products or services, foster customer trust, and ultimately drive revenue growth.
In this lesson, I will cover the art of crafting a highly effective lead magnet or ‘freebie’ page.
The primary purpose of lead magnets is to offer something of value to your prospective clients in exchange for their contact information, typically email addresses.
A lead magnet page is a targeted and focused platform designed to do one thing exceptionally well – capture valuable leads. These leads are not just casual visitors but potential clients or customers who have shown genuine interest in what you have to offer.
The beauty of a lead magnet page lies in its simplicity. Unlike lengthy, complex web pages that can overwhelm visitors with information, a lead magnet page is a concise, strategically designed space that encourages an immediate action – exchanging contact information for a valuable resource. The main reason for a short, simple lead magnet page is that you want the decision to sign up to be impulsive. I’ll cover more reasons in the video.
Benefits of a strong lead magnet page:
Lead generation
Data collection
Content promotion
Strategies for lead generation success:
Strategic placement
User-friendly forms
Mobile optimisation
Although getting warm leads on to your email list is the primary objective of your lead magnet, it is really important to nurture your leads and not launch straight into sales pitch on the first email after signing up.
With the insights gained here, you will be able to engage your target audience more effectively and convert them into loyal customers or clients.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCE:

Your Contact Me page is a pivotal point of connection between you and prospective clients. It's not just a form; it's an opportunity to convey how you can be of service.
Benefits of a Contact Me Page:
Enhanced Communication
Improved User Experience
Lead Generation
Trust and Credibility
When designing your contact form, think strategically about the fields you include. They should provide you with enough information to pre-qualify the person as a potential fit for your services. The information you collect should also comply with data protection laws and regulations so be sure to check this out and always include a link to your privacy policy. You should also include an explicit consent box.
Depending on your business and the services you offer, I would strongly urge you to have an option for prospective clients to book a call (either free or paid) with you.
Ensure that all your contact information is prominently displayed on the Contact Me page. Include your email address, phone number, and any other relevant means of communication. Hyperlink these details to make it easy for visitors to reach out through their preferred method. You can hyperlink by creating a link from the anchor text for your email as: mailto:yourname@email.com and for your phone number: tel:0123456789 (no spaces in any of these).
Lastly, it's crucial to set clear expectations about what will happen once they fill in the contact form.
By designing an engaging Contact Me page that speaks to your audience's needs, pre-qualifies potential clients, and provides accessible contact options, you can create a valuable bridge between your business and those seeking your services. This page is all about initiating meaningful connections and paving the way for future collaborations.
Your website is more than a digital brochure; it's a dynamic entity in the ever-evolving online landscape. Regular content updates are the best way to keep it fresh. These updates will keep your site relevant to your ideal audience who may change as time goes on.
Benefits of regular content updates:
Improved Relevance
Enhanced SEO
Increased Audience Engagement
Established Authority
Expanded Online Presence
Whilst ensuring that your website pages are updated, there’s only so much changes you can make without a complete overhaul. At the heart of your content strategy is blogging.
Now, think about the visuals on your website. Visuals are like your website's accessories; they say a lot about your style and personality. Regularly refreshing your images and graphics is essential to provide your audience with an up-to-date and visually pleasing experience. It's about enhancing their experiences and ensuring your website always looks its best.
Additionally, visuals contribute to branding. They create a consistent aesthetic, allowing your audience to recognise and remember your website. It's like giving your website a makeover to attract and retain more visitors.
One of the most important maintenance tasks you need to focus on is dead links. Dead links are commonly known as broken links and are like potholes on the digital highway. They will frustrate your website visitors because when clicked, lead nowhere and ultimately cause lost sales and revenue.
Dead links also impact your website's SEO. Search engines crawl through your website, and encountering dead links can be a roadblock to their indexing process. These links can signal a lack of maintenance and contribute to a less favourable perception of your website in search engine rankings. So, ensuring your website is free from dead links is crucial.
I highly recommend running your website through a free tool like deadlinkchecker. It will show you all the pages with broken links so that you can go in to fix them.
But maintaining a website isn't just about cleaning up broken links. It's also about creating a cohesive and engaging user experience. When it comes to your blog, it's not just about individual posts; it's about weaving them into a compelling narrative.
Calls to action (CTAs) are the digital equivalent of friendly signposts on a complex journey – they guide your website visitors towards specific actions you want them to take. Whether you're inviting them to subscribe to your newsletter, make a purchase, or book a consultation, CTAs are the beacons that light the way.
Imagine a visitor to your website coming across a CTA, inviting them to download a free e-book related to a promotion from several months ago. Their excitement turns into frustration when they realise that the e-book is no longer available. This is a missed opportunity, and worse, it can create a sense of disappointment.
Outdated calls-to-action can also really harm your brand and credibility - you want to have consistency across your online presence for whatever you are promoting at the time.
Keeping your CTAs current and in line with your website's ongoing promotions is not just a courtesy to your audience; it's a smart business strategy. When your CTAs match the real offerings on your website, you ensure that your visitors aren't misled or frustrated by broken promises. Don’t be afraid to change these up and experiment to see what gives you better conversion rates on what you’re promoting.
By maintaining relevant and effective CTAs, you help your audience navigate your website seamlessly, creating a more satisfying experience for them and maximising your conversion potential.
