In this tutorial we take a look at how the attacking phase of the game works, how, ideally the game is played and as a coach what to look for from a team.
We look at how teams keep possession while playing out from the back with some of the ways this is achieved and the key factors that allow teams to keep the ball and play through the midfield third and penetrate into the final third either through the centre or using width, and the ways goals are created and scored.
We also look at the reasons for and benefits of possession such as, dictating the pace of the game by knowing how to slow it down or speed it up and using it to stretch opposition defences and also how to decide whether at any given time retaining possession or penetration is more appropriate. It's designed as a resource to benefit not only those involved in grassroots coaching but also to help experienced coaches who may need a little additional help in furthering their coaching education on the pathway to achieving their coaching badges.
While there are many clues on how to coach the key factors of attacking contained in this video, it's only when seen along with the video dedicated to coaching the attacking phase that a clearer understanding of the attacking phase and how to coach it emerges.
For coaches who find coaching the attacking phase a little daunting and especially those whose sessions are being assessed by professionals on the pathway to coaching badges, this video goes right to the heart of how to simplify the process.
This tutorial explains how to put on a game related attacking session regardless of the attacking topic in question by explaining the key factors of all attacking sessions.
We show one session from start to finish, explaining and illustrating the specifics of that topic and giving common coaching points from other topics, leading to an understanding of how closely related all attacking sessions are regardless of the topic, plus a full explanation and illustration of coaching a specific individual player position.
It also explains how coaches can get through coaching sessions, either while being assessed on a coach education pathway or generally in their coaching sessions without needing to stand on the side-line waiting for something to go wrong in order to make a valuable coaching point.
This lecture explains and illustrates the basic principles of the defending phase of the game.
We look at how teams defend as a unit and the role of each individual within that unit.
Starting with defending from the front, we see how the defending team moves in relation to the position of the ball, and what changes occur in that shape as opponents move the ball from side to side or progress up the pitch and explain those changes.
We also look at defending close to and in the penalty area and how the roles of defending players can change as well as what, as a coach you should be looking out for.
Along with this we explain and illustrate examples of what constitutes good or bad marking and some finer details such as recovery runs and tracking runs also included in this lecture is an example of high press defending, how it's done and the idea behind it, and although we've reserved most of the examples and illustrations of high press or counter pressing for the transition lecture , this lecture contains an example of one of the most commonly used high pressing styles when defending from the front.
Whether working towards achieving coaching badges or simply wishing to better understand the process of coaching the defending phase, this lecture will prove an immensely useful resource.
Before getting to a game related session the video contains some easily understood examples of defending exercises that help coach teams to quickly and easily understand the defensive shape.
These lead us into explaining and illustrating how to coach defending in a game, it covers all the key factors of defending as a team and the role of the players.
It illustrates how, regardless of the defending topic you may have to coach in a session on the pathway to a badge, that all the sessions are closely related and not only shows one session from start to finish including basic defending and illustrations of good, recovery, delay, tracking and marking, but also gives advice on what to look for in other specific sessions.
Why choose The Soccer Coaches and what distinguishes these videos from other resources?
This course addresses the needs of those coaches who wish to enhance their understanding of the game and how its coached, especially those on a coach education pathway who are working towards a UEFA License.
The course is delivered by Kieran Donnelly, a UEFA B Coach with decades of experience coaching Youth Teams, Senior Teams, Representative Teams, League Of Ireland Youth, Women's Soccer & 7 years experience coaching players in the Emerging Talent Programme for the Football Association of Ireland.
The course fundamentally addresses the most common problems experienced by coaches, it provides in one resource, a clear and concise explanation of how the game is played in its three phases of attack, defence and transition and how to coach them.
These tutorials are produced to show all this and to alleviate the confusion and frustrations coaches sometimes feel, they're designed to connect it all and lay bare the bigger picture when it comes to understanding and coaching soccer.
Tactics and formations can be debated but the basic principles of the game and how it's coached stay the same at all levels of the game. Once the basic principles are clearly understood , those aspects of the game which can seem complex become much easier to understand and the pieces fall into place, these tutorials also helps expand the coaches understanding of how to analyse what’s good or otherwise about the game as their team plays and how to correct it.
A series of new and shorter tutorials will be added as time goes by but for now, should you choose to purchase, enjoy and we'd greatly appreciate your feedback.
