You’ve just picked up a script - whether for fun or for an audition - and the first question hits: where do I start?
In this lesson, we uncover the very first step to approaching any script and tackle common pitfalls actors face when diving in too quickly. Discover how to truly see the characters for who they are and lay the groundwork for authentic, compelling performances.
Script analysis isn’t just important - it’s essential. In this lesson, I’ll explain why poor script analysis can leave your performance weak and shaky and how mastering this skill helps you decode a script into clear, actionable choices. We’ll discuss how it anchors you during auditions, on set, and when taking directions, making you more reliable and confident.
Taking the time to learn script analysis will make you a far better actor!
How do you truly step into a character’s shoes?
This lesson introduces the concept of the character’s point of view about the world (POV) - the “lens” or "frame" through which they see and interact with the world. We’ll explore how the POV shapes a character’s intentions and behaviours, giving you a deep, embodied understanding of who your character is.
Through practical exercises, you’ll learn to formulate a “working hypothesis” of who your character is and how to use it to guide your performance.
This is a practice session.
I will invite you to think about POVs for the characters in the Boss and Employee scene. Then you’ll have a chance to put them into practice: I have recorded the scene twice, playing both Chris and Loz and leaving the space for your lines, so you can start exercising POV with me, even in the absence of an acting partner.
Watch me demonstrate how POV shifts the entire performance and how words truly only become meaningful when we know who is the person uttering them.
Demonstrations include 2 different POVs for Chris and 2 different POVs for Loz.
In this lesson we dive into the power of intentions.
Intentions reveal the behaviours and emotions driving the character moment by moment, and bring depth and truth to your performance. You’ll learn how intentions can offer a more nuanced approach to character and to the scene compared to objectives, and how they reflect and go hand in hand with the character’s POV. By breaking down each line of a scene, we’ll explore how to craft specific intentions that guide your emotional and behavioural choices. This meticulous approach helps you move beyond surface-level acting, syncing your body and mind with the character’s reality. Over time, this practice makes your performances precise, layered, and authentic, while freeing you to be fully present in the moment.
And with practice it gets easy and quick!
In this practice session I take you through an in-depth analysis of the Boss and Employee scene.
In this lesson, we focus on practicing your character’s intentions to ensure they speak to both your mind and body.
I will show you how to personalise intentions, if they feel unclear or remain stuck in your head. The intentions need to make your body spring into action!
Sometimes, you may struggle to emotionally connect to certain intentions or scenes, especially in the beginning. This is normal as you're still learning to step outside yourself.
Here is a very useful exercise ‘the talking out exercise’, that will help you connect and build the emotional foundation for your character's intentions.
In this lesson, we’ll explore relationship work, which is absolutely crucial for crafting authentic performances.
Just like us, characters are shaped by the relationships around them.
In this class you’ll learn how to look at relationships in a script and how to connect emotionally to them and make them an integral part of your acting work.
You will also learn how to use your personal experience to fuel your relationship work.
Watch me demonstrate the influence that relationships have on your performance.
I chose and demonstrated two different relationships for Chris and Loz.
Emotional preparation is one of the most powerful tools in an actor’s toolkit. It allows you to access raw, specific emotions needed for emotionally charged scenes/moments in a scene.
In this class I’ll show you how to use Emotional Prep to encapsulate the significance of the moment in a way that speaks to you directly and truthfully. This process trains your emotional instrument and allows you to access emotions more easily and precisely.
All through the protection of your imagination.
In this practice session, we’ll exercise finding the Prep Line through the script Care.
Actors must experience emotions truthfully, in order to do justice to a character and create a genuine connection with the audience. Strong emotions can be accessed safely without reliving traumas by using imagination, as the brain reacts to imagined circumstances just like it reacts to real ones. Emotional preparation allows actors to reclaim their emotions without triggering past traumas.
It’s time to put into practice all you’ve learnt so far and in particular point of view by… taking your character out in the world.
This exercise will help you embody the POV further and increase ownership of your work.
In this lesson I will explain the famous Repetition Exercise, as a precious tool to work on your emotional and behavioural instrument.
Use recording yourself to sharpen your emotional and behavioral instrument and realign how you feel with what you deliver.
Now that you have the tools to grow your technique, let’s focus on the mindset you need to thrive in the industry.
In this lesson we’ll explore the many components that create a strong, winning mindset, which will allow you to navigate the industry and stay healthy.
From resilience, to taking care of yourself and of your craft, confidence and the willingness to be seen. Success takes time, so patience and being proactive are key.
In this lesson we’ll tackle and clarify the often confusing topic of Casting Type!
Casting Type is the key to understanding how the industry sees you and how to leverage that perception to book more roles and build a strong brand. In this class you’ll discover how to identify your type and use it as your strength. Casting Type isn’t about limiting yourself—it’s about mastering your niche so you can break through the noise and grow as an actor.
In this final lesson, we dive into one of the most crucial aspects of your acting career - finding an agent.
Why do you need one, and how do you secure the right fit? Learn what agents do beyond booking auditions, and learn to craft professional representation submissions. This lesson is packed with tips, including some common mistakes actors make, especially at the beginning. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to elevate your career, this lesson will support you and guide you in connecting with agents.
Congratulations and thank you!
