DOWNLOAD LINK TO CONTRACT - I WILL BE GOING THROUGH THIS PART BY PART

What is a contract?
It is a binding agreement that sets the rules for the graphic design project you are about to get into.
Formal Contracts VS Contracts
Formal - Outlines everything that you will be designing for the client.
Informal - Providing everything in the formal contract in an email.
Parts of the contract
The description / costs - Spend a lot of time on this area because this will be everything about the project. If something goes wrong with the project, you can always come back to this contract and show what you wrote which will help your defense. You also want to include the costs of each item.
Details on client deposit - Figure out your payment system. You can either do two payments or three. Make sure you do not start the project until you receive a first deposit.
Printing Services - Let them know the project does not include printing.
Payment Schedule - This is where you set the terms of how you will get paid. Remember, they are hiring you…..you make the rules
Additional Changes / Revisions - After a project is done….IT'S DONE. If they want future alterations, then it will incur another charge. DO NOT EVER GIVE UNLIMITED REVISIONS. I like to give them 3 rounds of revisions which is a good amount for them to finalize the design you make for them.
Client Responsibilities - Letting the client know how long they have to get you the information you need to design their project, and how much time they have to get back to you after you send them their drafts.
Early Termination - This will cover your ASS. Sometimes people decide to back out of a project because they found another source for a better price. If they back out early after work has begun….they lose their deposit and they have NO RIGHTS to use the work that was sent to them as drafts.
Accreditation / Promotion - Getting permission from your client to add their work in your portfolio.
Copyrights - You can determine this on your own. I let the client know that the copyrights will be released to them once the final payment has been received.
Signing the contract
Informal contract - They can just reply to your email "GOOD TO GO"
Formal contract - They will sign and date the contract and make sure you both have a copy.
Logo Design Categories
One of the first things you want to do is figure out what type of a logo yo9u are thinking about designing for the client. I would try and show 1 of each of these when presenting first drafts to a client.
Word Marks
A word mark is simply a logo that is made up of the spelled out letters of the company
Examples include Disney, Fedex, Subway, Visa, Xerox, Ebay and more.
Pictoral Marks
A pictorial mark is a symbol that represents a company. Pictoral marks can be combined with lettering also or just be standalone.
Examples include Adobe, Apple, Starbucks, Target and more.
Letter Forms
These are my favorite and many Designers feel the same way. Letter form logos are a true challenge, but I believe that clients tend to lean towards them for their uniqueness to the company. A letter mark is a logo where the letters or initials are creatively designed to represent the company.
The cursor will then turn into a cross-hairs icon. You can then click and drag the mouse over any area which will select it. When you release the mouse button, the image is taken, and you’ll hear the sound of a camera snapshot.
The keyboard shortcuts for image capturing are also listed under Keyboard Shortcuts of the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences panel.
If You Have A PCMake sure you are holding down the ALT key and press the Print Screen. When you do this it actually has copied the screen, you must now go into your Graphic Layout and Paste the object on your canvas.
In Windows XP, you can go to your accessories folder and there will be a snipping tool that will give you more options with this, but for a Graphic Designer if you are using any Adobe Programs you should be able to paste right onto your canvas.
NOTE: When doing this on a PC it will take a shot of your whole entire screen, desktop background and all. You will then have to go into Adobe Photoshop and CROP or make a clipping make to hide everything in Adobe Illustrator.
Receiving Payment
Let's be real here, you are working to get PAID. In this lecture I will be touching on the importance of finalizing a project and getting PAID. It's not only great to get PAID, but once a project is complete you can now add it to your portfolio and then move on to the next client.
Getting Paid Before Releasing Files
You want to make sure that you receive the final payment before you give away any of you hard work on their artwork. If you decide to prematurely give them their files, you may run the risk of never getting paid or getting paid months later, because at that point, your client has control.
Receiving Payment From Geographically Close Clients
This is very simple. Depending on how you set up your business (talk to your accountant), you will want the client to make you out a check to your company name. You can either have them send this check to your business address, home address or P.O Box. You can also meet up with them for a close out meeting and receive your money then.
Receiving Payment From Geographically Far Clients
This is also very simple. You can either take their credit card through a merchant service account that you have set up or you can use Paypal. I suggest setting up your paypal account in advance so it's ready to receive payments.
