Introduction to the course.
Description of the three essential types of line which come together to form Drawings.
Progressing from the intro to the line types, this section introduces basic concepts in Drawing. We will discuss Foreshortening and Perspective as tools for inducing the visual illusion of depth in the drawing. The section relates to how the three types of lines create the above mentioned visual illusion on a 2 dimensional surface.
This section is about the importance of ‘Feeling of Weight’ in drawings.
Action poses can be made more impactful by using the lines effectively. This section explains with active drawings as examples about how the lines work to achieve impact.
Balance is an issue with most beginner drawings. This section identifies the issue with active drawings as example. On completion of this section the student can pin point the balance issues with their later drawings and also find ways to correct their own work.
This section looks at the art of making thumbnails for animation key drawings. The process of thumnailing is discussed with active drawing work. At the end of this section the student will be encouraged to try out thumnailing self planned poses and action etc
Line of action is often taught as a stand-alone concept in drawing. In this section this concept is introduced as an extension of how lines are used to construct thr drawing. The idea of line of action is explained with actual drawings. This section is aimed at making a simple and clear explanation of this concept. At the end of this section the student will be able to see and identify active line of action in a given drawing. With a sound understanding of this idea and with self initiated practice the student will have a firm idea of how this tool can be used to add value to their work.
This section wraps up the course with a round up of all topics covered. And closes with an encouragement to start a dedicated sketch book.
The Art of making Strong and readable drawings depends on a lots of concepts and rules of drawing. Many such concepts like ‘ perspective’ , ‘Foreshortening’ etc are taught in most classes directly as individual elements. At the end of long study, Drawing professionally boils down to not thinking about the drawing process while drawing and focusing on the feeling , acting, posing etc which is in the mind. It’s an idea and the idea isn’t the drawing, its is still a feeling that a good drawing carries while it is executed in the right way with just the right economy of lines and the right shape off lines.
This course starts by pointing to the core aspect of drawing. It’s the lines that make up the drawing.
Drawings were always about communication and instruction. And the success of a drawing depends on its readability. This course id aimed at the study of 3 types of lines which add value to the drawing. Based on an understanding of these 3 types of lines , he course progresses into fundamental ideas in the art Drawing, which tie in seamlessly into the rhetoric about lines.
Ultimately we as illustrators will always be making lines talk. Let’s understand them well.
Advanced ideas like foreshortening and Perspective in drawing become easy to understand when we are drawing actively. This course is a continuous series of drawing examples and the idea is to inspire the student to take the bold step into making more sketches and self analyse.
