DIY Double Ender Remote Recording Method - Step By Step Process
The first step is to download and install Signal or a similar application. Call your Co-host or interview guest via Signal desktop application. Establish connection and communication. You will now be able to hear each other while recording your audio separately.
If you are using an audio interface, select the interface as your input and output source in the Signal app under settings.
For both parties, fire up your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and make sure your audio interface is selected.
On Macs your audio should automatically be routed to both Signal and your DAW at the same time. This has happened for me with no issues.
If you encounter a problem, or if you are using an app other than Signal and it doesn’t work, try using a virtual audio mixer such as Voicemeeter for PC or Soundflower for Mac. Use these virtual mixers to route the audio to both Signal and your DAW at the same time.
Prepare for your podcast, set gain levels and then press record.
Now you need to create an audio marker. This will make it easier to align the 2 separate audio files in post production.
To do this, count to 4, then on the 5th beat both parties need to clap at the same time. You can do this a few times to make sure you are both clapping at the same time.
In post production, you will now be able to visually see a spike in the audio waveform. You can now line up these waveforms where the clap takes place. Your audio will now be in sync.
Enjoy recording your podcast.
After you have finished, stop recording and send the 2 raw files to whoever is doing the editing. If you are doing the editing get you co-host to export the .WAV file and send it to you.
