This lecture will focus on the four prevailing narratives about the church in China and implications for those seeking to serve.
Many of the issues facing the church are symptoms of larger dynamics that have been present ever since Christianity first came to China. Understanding the history of the interaction between Christianity and Chinese culture and the state provides a context in which to address the challenges as well as the opportunities facing the church today. These are the themes that will be explored in this lecture.
The “church in China” comprises three identifiable "faces," each with its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. As the church’s context has changed with modernization and urbanization, so have Chinese Christians’ expressions of their faith.This lecture will take an in-depth look at the three faces.
Our misconceptions about the church may tell us more about ourselves than about the true situation of Christians in China. Four common myths continue to color the perceptions of many regarding China’s church. Here we examine the origin of these myths and both the realities and misconceptions behind them. We also introduce four questions to ask whenever you hear something about the church in China and are not sure whether it is true.
