Welcome to the first lesson of our Survival Thai course! In this lesson, we will focus on one of the most important and unique aspects of the Thai language: tones. Mastering Thai tones is crucial because they can change the meaning of words entirely, even if the words have the same spelling.
Thai has five tones:
Mid Tone – A level tone that stays flat.
Low Tone – Starts at a mid-level pitch and falls lower.
Falling Tone – Starts high and falls sharply.
High Tone – Starts at a mid-level pitch and rises higher.
Rising Tone – Starts low and rises sharply.
To help you master these tones, we’ll go through each one with examples. Remember, you can pause the video at any time to practice the tones until you feel confident. Repeating these tones out loud and comparing them to the examples will significantly improve your pronunciation.
