Welcome to "Teaching Trauma-Informed Prenatal Yoga" an introduction to teaching yoga to your pregnant students, clients, and patients through a trauma-informed lens.

This is an adaption of a larger certification we offer called, "Guiding with Compassion" (Copyright, 2022) which is a course registered through Yoga Alliance.

This course was designed by Victoria McCargar and Jessica Freedman as a way to reach those folks who work with prenatal populations who have been affected by trauma. Specifically, those folks that work in environments that have a need for a higher level of understanding when it comes to the practice of guiding a safe and trauma-informed yoga class for pregnant people. Our approach is educational and compassionate with safety as our number one priority.

Please note, that this is an introduction to this work and not the complete training. This will not certify you to teach trauma-informed prenatal yoga, however, if you are interested in learning more or still trying to decide if that is the type of work you would like to do, this is a wonderful starting point.

In this first lecture, Victoria and Jessica introduce themselves and go over the basic guidelines for approaching trauma-informed yoga with your pregnant students.

It includes a few lists of things like:

    1. What postures to avoid and why.

    2. How to dress for your class.

    3. The importance of safe and appropriate language in class.

    4. What to avoid discussing with your students.

    5. The various settings your classes could be offered in.

    6. Who can be affected by trauma.

  • "Trauma-Informed Prenatal Yoga Class" with yoga props.28:42

Victoria will be implementing the use of yoga props (bolster, blocks, blanket) and if you don't have yoga props, she offers alternative suggestions. This class is based on "Script 1" in your resource section, below. The second script is an alternative movement practice that illustrates additional postures and shapes.

  • Journal assignment- After class, write a few lines about how you are feeling.
  • Trauma-Informed Prenatal Yoga, Class #229:09
