Description

The Montessori method is teaching from concrete to abstract.

Montessori Method uses concrete Materials to teach and introduce new concepts. Using concrete hands-on, in this case math materials, makes abstract concepts clearer. As the child works with these materials, she/he gets a full understanding of number concepts.

In this course, we will be using number rods a lot.

So, what are number rods?

These are a set of ten rods. Rod #1 has one red section, rod # 2 is twice the length of #1 with two equal sections, red and blue. Rod #3 is three times the length of #1 with three equal sections. And so on,  to rod #10 with ten sections of red and blue.

What does the child learn from number rods?

1. Measurement, lessons show the child to compare rods size to build a stair, thus quantifying measurement as each rods sections match precisely.

2. Names of numbers in sequential order.

3. Number symbols.  The child will learn to put number rods in correct order and recognize the rod size by its number.. They will  learn to write these symbols, moving toward abstract.

4. Number combination. By comparing two shorter rods to a longer one. Example which two rods make eight : 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5.

5. Addition, 3 + 5

6. Addition table.

This course has video lessons for all these concepts and options for materials.

Next the child is introduced to base-ten, again with video lessons, giving visual learning with vocal.

Each lesson in this course and Montessori method is a new layer to a progression toward abstract. Learning from hands-on concrete to writing is a progression toward abstract. Moving from concrete to abstract gives students solid understanding of math concepts and lays a solid foundation.
