Kick off your journey with "Tattoo Fundamentals Online"! In this introduction, you'll get a glimpse of what to expect from the course as I guide you through both the artistic and business aspects of tattooing. My goal is to equip you with the essential knowledge and safety practices to help you confidently develop your skills as a tattoo artist. Let’s dive in and start your tattooing journey!
There are two main types of tattoo machines: coil and rotary. We’ll be using a wireless rotary machine because it’s the easiest to set up and offers the best mobility.
In this section, you'll learn about the different types of tattoo needles, including liners, round shaders, and magnums. We'll cover needle configurations and how each is used for specific effects. You'll also get familiar with needle sizes and labels, ensuring you understand how to choose the right needle for your tattoo work.
In this section, we’ll explore how deep the needle should penetrate the skin during tattooing. You'll learn about the importance of consistent needle depth to avoid issues like blowouts, where ink spreads beneath the skin. We’ll also discuss how different areas of the body can affect tattoo outcomes and what to watch out for to ensure successful ink deposition.
In this video, I'll guide you through the setup process for practicing tattooing. We'll cover my preferred setup method, but remember, there are various ways to set up based on individual artist preferences.
In this video, you'll get an overview of all the essential tattoo supplies you'll need. There's a supply list in the resource section so that it's easy for you to get your materials together.
In this video, we go into a more in-depth look at what each item is used for. Pause at the end of the video to view a detailed list of supplies, or download the PDF with links provided in the course resources for easy reference.
In this video, you'll learn how to set up your workspace for tattooing. We'll cover sanitizing equipment, and organizing your tools. You'll see how to wrap your machine, prepare your ink caps, and set up your practice area, ensuring everything is ready for a clean and efficient session.
In this video, you'll practice creating simple lines and shapes to get a feel for your machine. Set your voltage to 8 volts to start and experiment with different needle sizes to understand their effects. This exercise will help you become more comfortable with the machine.
In this video, we’ll explore fundamental shading techniques to enhance your tattooing skills. We’ll cover:
Whip Shading: Create a gradient effect by moving your machine upward from the skin.
Stipple Shading: Using a 3 round liner to apply sparse or dense dots by adjusting your hand speed, with a recommended voltage of 5 to 6.
Pendulum Shading: Achieve a dark center with soft edges by swinging your machine in a pendulum-like motion.
Packing: For solid color fills, move the needle in small, tight circles to ensure complete saturation.
Practice these techniques to develop your shading skills and create diverse effects in your tattoos.
In this video, we’ll address the crucial topic of cross-contamination in tattooing. Understanding and preventing hazards related to blood exposure and body fluids is essential for maintaining a safe and sanitary practice. I’ve included a link to an online bloodborne pathogens course by the Canadian Red Cross for you to complete. This knowledge is vital for every tattoo artist. Once you're finished, join me in the next video to continue your training.
In this video, we’ll shift focus to the business aspects of tattooing. While practicing your craft is crucial, understanding and preparing for the business side is equally important for success. Join me as we explore essential business strategies and preparation steps for your tattoo career.
In this video, we’ll explore three main tattoo business models: Employee, chair rental, and operating a private studio. Each option offers different benefits and challenges, so understanding them will help you choose the best path for your tattoo career.
In this video, I’ll share how I streamlined my booking process using a custom form. I use JotForm for bookings, but there are other options available. Using a form will help keep you organized and have clients answer all necessary questions and minimize back and forth.
In this video, we’ll discuss the importance of waivers in tattooing. Waivers provide written consent and outline the tattooing procedures and policies for clients. I’ve included examples in the course links for you to review and adapt as needed. If possible, consult with a lawyer to ensure your waiver covers all necessary details.
In this video, I’ll discuss the importance of liability and professional insurance for tattoo artists. While a solid waiver is essential, insurance provides an extra layer of protection against potential lawsuits. Though it’s not necessary for tattooing only friends and family, it’s crucial when you start working with a broader client base. I’ve included links to resources and insurers to help you explore your options.
In this section, we’ll explore essential marketing strategies for attracting clients. From the basics of establishing a strong online presence to key practices for growing your client base, I’ll cover the must-have elements for successfully promoting your tattoo business.
In this video, we’ll dive into the importance of having a website for your tattoo business. A website is essential for showcasing your portfolio, providing client information, and offering booking options. No coding skills required—many platforms offer easy-to-use templates. Explore the links below to get started.
In this video, we'll explore effective promotional strategies for your tattoo business. Social media is a powerful tool for showcasing your work and gaining visibility—make sure to create profiles on major platforms and actively post. Encourage reviews on Google to boost your online presence. Additionally, consider running promotions, referral bonuses, or creative offers like special discounts for holidays. Get inspired and find what works best for you!
In this video, we’ll dive into stenciling. Now that we’ve covered the business side, it's time to focus on creating and applying tattoo stencils for your designs.
In this video, we’ll cover the process of creating and applying hand and machine stencils. Start by removing the tanned color paper and tracing your drawing onto the transparent sheet. For machine stencils, use a stencil machine with the machine stencil paper. Remember to print only outlines, as shading will blur. Once you have your stencil, sanitize the skin, apply a thin layer of stencil stuff, and carefully place the stencil on the skin.
In this video, you'll practice tattooing a stenciled design on practice skin. Start by cleaning the area with alcohol, applying deodorant, and placing your stencil. Allow extra time for the stencil to settle on the plastic practice skin. While tattooing, stretch the skin and do your lines, wiping away excess ink with distilled water. Avoid using green soap until your outline is done, as it may remove the stencil. Use your shading needle to experiment with different shading techniques from the previous video.
Watch and learn as I demonstrate essential tattoo techniques, showcasing precision and artistry in real time. This visual guide is perfect for understanding the flow and execution of professional tattoo work.
In this section, we'll cover the essential process of take down. This is where your knowledge of bloodborne pathogens becomes crucial. Ensuring everything is properly sanitized and avoiding cross contamination are key steps. Let's dive into the details of safe and effective take down procedures.
In this video, we focus on preventing cross contamination during take down. Your gloves are now contaminated from tattooing, so it's crucial to avoid touching anything unwrapped, like your phone or other non-tattoo items. Always remove your gloves before handling anything else to maintain a sanitary environment.
In this video, we cover the take down process to ensure everything is cleaned and sanitized properly. Start by removing your gloves after handling the client and payment. Open the storage for your sharps disposal, glove up again, and discard used needles into the sharps container. Remove and dispose of all wrapped materials. Next, clean your machine and bottles with Cavicide wipes, dry them with paper towels, and store them in a sanitized area. Finally, wipe down your rolling tray and practice area to complete the clean-up.
