While traditional Tang Soo Do does not have any weapons, I added the Jo staff to give you a different aspect of your training, to learn to make any weapon you hold an extension of your body. The Jo staff is a practical weapon that can be found anywhere, such as a broomstick, pool cue, or even a large tree branch. A practical and effective weapon.
In this lesson, you will learn how to hold the Jo properly and learn the first basic technique, the thrust.
In this lesson, you will learn how to strike effectively with the Jo staff.
The Jo staff can also be held and used the same as a samurai sword. In this lesson, you will learn the proper cutting technique with the Jo.
Looking at the Jo Kata at slow speed, from the front view and side view, with a tutorial explanation before actually performing it.
In this lesson, I will talk you through the kata from a rearview and slow speed so you can follow along. You will then follow along at a little faster speed without any instruction. You've got this!
The Jo Kata demonstrated at full speed. Take your time, slowly add more power and speed, and you've got it!
Congratulations on completing the Tang Soo DO Intermediate Course!! You've come a long way so far and should feel confident in the skills you have developed. Your balance, agility, focus, and fitness level should have improved by this time.
In the Advanced Course, you move on to advanced techniques that will prepare you for black belt. The forms are longer and more difficult with changes in speed, tempo, and direction, and the techniques will require your strictest attention to detail. You will also begin to use weapons, which are an extension of your body, building coordination and strength.
Everything you have learned in the basic and intermediate courses builds upon one another to prepare you for this course. If you have not put in the time, practice, work, and sweat to truly master the basic and intermediate courses, you will find this course much more difficult. Remember, you must build your skills on a solid foundation, not on sand!
Once you have successfully completed this advanced course you should have the skills and knowledge to test for black belt in the art of Tang Soo Do. From this point, you should take all that you have learned and make it your own, changing and adapting things to suit your physical limitations, mindset, and future goals. Reaching black belt level only means you have mastered the basics of a system, now is when the true learning and development begins, and it is a lifetime journey!
