Hi, my name is Alisa Shine.
I have been a dance instructor for nearly 20 years. I am blessed to have worked with women of all ages and cultural origins (in Europe, Asia & Australia). Dance is the most primal expression of life, it's the way to connect to your body, to express emotions, to release the physical and emotional blockages. I firmly believe dance leads to health!
I have been teaching and performing belly dance for over 12 years. Natural need for expansion led me to exploring Polynesian dance style. This is how Tahitian Fusion Choreography Course came about.
I hope you find it useful and enjoy dancing!
This course has been designed for belly dancers of an intermediate to professional level and belly dance teachers.
The course consists of 3 parts:
- Part 1 is focused on basic belly dance and Tahitian dance drills
- Part 2 includes step by step guide into Tahitian Fusion choreography. It's been split in 6 sections for easier learning. Please practice them as many times as you need until it settles in your body.
- Part 3 is an assessment. You will be offered to learn and record yourself dancing the choreography
As dancers we want to be careful and loving to our bodies because we want to dance happily for many years. In this section we discuss safety, body positioning and breathing throughout the dance practice.
In this video we prepare ourselves for our dance practice, we do hip stretches and shimmies. Please make sure you warm up your body they way you used to in order to protect from any injuries.
In this video we explore the difference between omi and ami pelvic circles. We also practice omi stationary and learn to transfer the body weight maintaining the dance technique.
We learn one of belly dancer's favorite movement - triangle! In this section there's a detailed technique explanation and a little dance combination to follow.
In this video we go over the hip accent down (also known as Soheir Zaki step, named after the legendary Egyptian belly dancer). We start stationary and then we add travel steps. This move takes time to practice if you have never done that before. Please take your time to practice it.
In this video we go over 3/4 shimmies up and down with travelling steps.
In this section we focus on belly drills. We go over the famous vacuum exercise followed by belly undulations, pops and flutters to engage our deeper belly muscles.
In this section we go over the African shimmy and variations of booty pop. Take your time to practice these fun moves!
In this video we learn to combine the omi circle with another isolation.
In this video we practice reverse lower body undulation (camel) first stationary. Then we put it together in a little combination.
Here we discuss the basic body positioning for Tahitian dance.
In this video we learn basic tamau step that we will further use in our choreography. Please practice it well before you go onto the next video
In this video we learn to make voluminous Tahitian figure eight (varu). We also explore the difference between the varu and belly dance figure eight.
In this video we focus on Tahitian Ami circles and their smaller variation - the fa'arapu circles. Enjoy!
In this video we go over the afata step (Tahitian box). Please follow the instructions carefully , as this move has proven to be the trickiest. Enjoy the process!
In this video we go over the first section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
In this video we go over the second section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
In this video we go over the third section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
In this video we go over the fourth section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
In this video we go over the fifth section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
In this video we go over the sixth section of the choreography. Practice it as many times as you need, before the choreography settles in your body.
Congratulations! You have made it. Now we practice the whole run through as many time as needed. Please note it requires a long practice before the choreography settles in your body.
The final assessment for the course is here. Remember, practice makes it perfect. Keep practicing and once you are ready - record yourself and submit your video for feedback. Good luck!
Have you been belly dancing for a while and would like to expand your dance vocabulary?
Are you a belly dance teacher and looking for some new choreography/class ideas to teach to your students?
Or maybe you have some dance showcase coming up and would like to stand out with your performance?
I am excited to share with you belly dance & Tahitian dance techniques and combinations which we will put together in a very expressive, jaw dropping Tahitian fusion choreography!
This choreography can be:
modified as suited
performed as a solo or a group dance
taught to belly dance students of intermediate to advanced levels
Used to inspire new ideas and projects
This course is designed for intermediate & advanced belly dance students, professional dancers and teachers.
The content is divided in 2 parts:
Part 1 focuses on detailed explanation of belly dance & Tahitian dance moves included in the choreography.
- Arm work
- Upper body work
- Hip work
- Foot work
We go over the drilling together. I give tips and techniques to make the movements look more juicy and isolated. We explore the difference of hip technique in belly dance and in Tahitian dance and talk about common technical mistakes dancers make in the movements.
In Part 2 we will be learning Tahitian fusion choreography. The part is divided into 6 sections. In each section I will be giving a combination without music first, then we practice it a few times with music. At the end we connect all the sections together, and you can practice as many times as you need until the choreography settles in your body.
Note for beginners:
I do NOT recommend this course if you have never danced before. It can be challenging and overwhelming to the point you feel disappointed in your abilities and never want to dance again. Besides, the tempo of choreography is quite fast so even experienced dancers will need to train well before they totally get it. We know that hip work in belly dance and Tahitian dance is very specific and requires a lot of practice. That’s why if you are a beginner get familiar with the basics first and once you are ready - jump in and let’s enjoy together!
Music:
The music I use in the class was composed by a great drummer of Lebanese background and a good friend of mine, Khader Ahmad. His style is truly unique, his drum work is truly inspiring and his music normally gets everybody up from a chair!
The track I use for the drum solo is called Tablahiti. The first part consists mainly of Arabic Rhythms then it merges with the second part where we find mostly Tahitian rhythms. Its original length is 4.03 min. I cut it down to 2.35 as the tempo of the music is quite intense and requires a good techniqality. In my opinion, short and energetic performances have a lasting impression.
I hope you enjoy this course as much as I did when I was recording it for you.
Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
