Who am I, what do I do, and introduction to this course.
Basic introduction to what a NAS is. We are talking generally about a NAS and what they are used for.
Synology is a brand known for its network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, catering to both home and business users. Their NAS products offer reliable storage, backup, and file sharing capabilities, along with a wide range of features such as remote access, multimedia streaming, and data protection. Synology NAS devices are known for their user-friendly DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which provides an intuitive interface for easy management and configuration. With a focus on performance, security, and scalability, Synology NAS systems are highly regarded for their robustness and versatility, making them a popular choice for individuals, small businesses, and enterprises alike.
DSM is the operating system and gui front end that is used on the Synology NAS we'll look at in this video
Steps for the initial configuration of a Synology NAS
This video covers how to setup, update and reset accounts and passwords
Looking at how to setup the network and network connectivity of the NAS
With the basic NAS setup now complete, let's look at DSM
This video covers a basic intro to traditional RAID options. We'll look at RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 3, RAID 5 and RAID 10
With the NAS setup and configured, it's now time to start configuring the disks within Storage Manager
How to create a volume from existing disks. We'll also look at the Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) type
With volumes created, how about access and permissions to these volumes/shares
FileStation is the primary application to navigate through the file structure and files on the NAS
Simple steps to delete volumes and storage pools that are no longer required.
Upgrading your Synology NAS pool size with larger disks in SHR lets you expand storage without rebuilding the entire array, preserving data and uptime. This lesson walks through replacing drives one by one, monitoring the rebuild process, and ensuring the system properly reallocates space to maximize your new capacity.
This is an optional video covering the end-to-end steps to configure a Synology NAS to a VMware ESXi environment
Troubleshooting and monitoring the health of the NAS is very important.
When alerts or warnings are triggered, this option allows notifications over email.
How is the security of the NAS?
Keeping the NAS and DSM updated is important. We'll cover it in this video
Taking advantage of Active Directory (AD) for users and permissions adds a further level of protection to the NAS
The NAS can be fully integrated with Active Directory (AD).
The NAS allows for external devices to be connected directly to the various USB ports
Thsi video covers the monitoring and controlling of the NAS power settings
The NAS can be configured as a DHCP Server, we'll show you how.
Scheduling tasks allows for specific tasks to be run at specific times
The great thing about the Synology NAS is the ability to install and configure additional apps
This video covers the steps on how to install some antivirus software onto your NAS.
This video covers the steps to setup your NAS as a media server, running Plex Meda Server
This video covers the steps on how to use your NAS as a webserver. How to install Wordpress and host a website
How to setup and run Virtual Machines (VM's) directly on a Synology NAS
Backing up you NAS ensures that any accidental losses or damage to data can be recovered. This video covers using the USB Copy application
Backing up you NAS ensures that any accidental losses or damage to data can be recovered. This video covers how to backup the NAS to the AWS cloud
Backing up you NAS ensures that any accidental losses or damage to data can be recovered. This video covers how to backup a Synology NAS to another Synology NAS
Let's get some snapshots setup across your NAS, automating the process to ensure your NAS is backed up and data is safe.
