Description

Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development

Energy plays a crucial role in the development of any country. Electricity is fundamental to socio-economic progress, powering industries, improving living standards, and enabling modern communication. Access to electricity enhances daily life by providing lighting, entertainment, and connectivity while also facilitating clean cooking and food preservation. As global demand for electricity continues to rise, sustainable energy solutions are becoming increasingly essential.

Currently, only about 50% of Myanmar’s population has access to electricity. While various methods exist to generate power, traditional energy sources such as coal and natural gas contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating climate change and its devastating effects. The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere leads to rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and threats to biodiversity. Climate change endangers both plant and animal species, making it imperative to transition to cleaner energy alternatives.

The Importance of Renewable Energy

To mitigate environmental damage and ensure sustainable development, the global community is prioritizing the adoption of renewable energy sources. This includes:

  • Generating electricity from solar, wind, and hydro power

  • Promoting the use of electric vehicles

  • Implementing energy-efficient technologies to reduce overall consumption

About the Course

This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of renewable energy, focusing on solar, hydro, and wind energy. Participants who complete all three modules will be awarded a Renewable Energy Fundamentals Certificate.

The wind energy module will cover:

  • Fundamentals of wind energy

  • Types and components of wind energy systems

  • Wind speed analysis and power generation estimation

  • Cost considerations for wind turbine installation

  • Key principles of designing and constructing a wind farm

  • Wind energy potential in Myanmar

Course Organizers

This course is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature Myanmar (WWF Myanmar) at the invitation of Thant Myanmar. With over 60 years of conservation efforts in nearly 100 countries, WWF is a leading global organization committed to environmental protection and sustainable development. WWF Myanmar, established in 2015, operates from Yangon and Dawei, focusing on key conservation areas such as:

  • The Ayeyarwady River Basin

  • The Dawna-Tanintharyi Region

  • Climate and energy

  • Wildlife protection and anti-wildlife trafficking

  • Forestry and freshwater conservation

  • Sustainable agriculture, finance, and infrastructure
