Description

This course will provide you practical knowledge at field of engineering surface hardening treatment selection and definitions during mechanical development process based on required attributes for product functionality. The course is structured in parts. The logic behind the partition based on understanding that correct application of surface treatment will be achieved by utilizing why, what, how strategy.

Why : understand why surface hardening treatment is required/beneficial for the particular application.

What: evaluate main attributes of surface hardening treatment which enables required functionality.

How: select most appropriate surface hardening treatment based on required functional attributes & define fully to attain those attributes from the supplier at consistent manner.

1. Part 1 (Why)- introduce the basics of: case & through hardening of steels

2. Part 2 ( How) - discussion of main technical attributes & proper definitions of common engineering surface hardening treatments:

· Carburizing (LPC)

· Carbonitriding

· Induction hardening

· Flame hardening

· Nitriding (Gas, Liquid, Ion)

· Nitrocarburizing (Tufftride, Nitrotec, QPQ, Melonite)

3. Part 3 (What) - surface hardening selection guidelines and summary based on main surface hardening treatment's  attributes as: applicable substrates, obtainable case depth, wear/fatigue/pitting/impact/corrosion resistances, as-treated precision, relative cost , max application temperature... The guideline present surface hardening treatments with its main attributes as catalogue for more efficient treatment selection.
