In New Zealand, there are only two accepted forms of English Requirements including ILETS & PTE
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It’s a globally recognised test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. Taking the IELTS is typically a mandatory step to study in New Zealand.
Types of IELTS Tests
There are two types of IELTS:
IELTS Academic: Required for study purposes (this is the one you’ll most likely take)
IELTS General: Usually for work or migration purposes
My Experience
I took my IELTS exam through the British Council. I spent a lot of time understanding the requirements and preparing accordingly. The type and level of program you choose will determine:
The overall band score required
The minimum score in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)
PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. Like IELTS, it is an English language proficiency test designed for non-native English speakers who want to study, work, or migrate to New Zealand.
Factors to consider when choosing a course
Hopefully by now your educational consultant has come back with a couple of course options that fits with your career aspirations. It’s time for you to shortlist the program by using some of the parameters to help you make a decision. These are decision making criteria I used.
Pro Tip: Create your own excel sheet and compare the programs side by side:
Course Fees: Compare the cost of each program to ensure it fits your budget.
Course Duration: How long does each program take to complete and what is the next intake date?
Internship/Placement Options: Prioritise programs which offer practical training options to gain work experience in New Zealand.
Program Content: Review the course structure and modules (if available) to make sure that it matches your interests and career pathway.
University or PTE: There are 8 universities in New Zealand. PTE stand for Private Training Establishment. There are more than 400 PTEs which offer programs at over 1000 locations in New Zealand. They are not publicly renowned like universities. They meet the provider quality education criteria and are independent. The cost and style of each education provider differs.
Location and lifestyle: Before you decide on a course, find out as much as you can about the place you will live, the education provider you will study with, and about living and studying in New Zealand.
1. Travel Distance and Duration
New Zealand is geographically distant from most countries.
Depending on your location, the journey can take up to 20 hours or more.
After arriving in New Zealand, you might need to take an internal flight (e.g., 1 hour or more) to reach your final destination.
2. Flight Stops and Layovers
Long-haul flights to New Zealand often include one or more refueling stops.
Common stopover locations include Asia, Australia, or the Pacific Islands.
You can usually arrange an overnight stay at a stopover location if you want to rest during your journey.
3. Transit Visas
You may need a Transit Visa for countries where your flight stops. For example, if your flight stops in Australia (even if you don’t leave the plane), you’ll likely need an Australian Transit Visa.
Always check with the nearest embassy or consulate or visit the official immigration website for visa requirements. If a Transit Visa is required, allow up enough time for processing. Plan your travel and visa applications well in advance to avoid delays and over-spending.
You call it a course, I call it the MAP.
This course is designed to accompany you through the real-life scenarios in your journey to New Zealand. It's more of a mega-reference, complete guide, everything you need all in one-stop. You can easily jump to sections that are more aligned to your stage within the map.
Studying in New Zealand is a life-changing experience. New Zealand is such a small study destination as compared to USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia that researching information can feel an overwhelming process without the right guidance. This course is specifically designed for international students who are planning to study in New Zealand and want a clear, step-by-step roadmap to success.
This course has been designed by ex-international student (myself). When I was doing my research to study in New Zealand I faced a challenge, I found myself burning out by googling all the information and lack of clarity started to seem like a frustrating experience. This was back in 2018 when we lived in simpler times. Before COVID-19 and AI taking over the world. But this challenge still exists, the need for international students to feel supported, empowered and motivated as they go through the stages of study abroad journey. This course came from a very simple, everyday need where I wished for a course, book, website, YouTube channel who could navigate the process in plain and simple language instead of drip-feeding information (which was often the case). This costed me time, money and effort. I would hate for you who is starting out in this journey to feel the same way as I did. This is the reason I have designed this course, to make the process simpler and make you feel motivated.
International students will gain a complete understanding of:
How to make the decision to study abroad (especially New Zealand)?
How to choose the right educational agent that is the right fit for them?
How to apply for the right program and institution in New Zealand?
How to start student visa application process?
How to plan for pre-departure?
What to expect in the first week of arriving in the country?
How to be an effective student?
How to find part-time and full-time work opportunities in your industry?
How to live and adapt to the Kiwi culture?
How to take care of your mental health as an international student?
This course has been designed and led by real-life experience. I have walked the path myself and it includes real-life stories, interactive activities, downloadable PDF guides, and expert guidance tailored to students.
Regardless of what stage you are in the journey, this program will guide you and help you prepare for your journey.
By the end of this course, you will become a confident international student. You will be equipped with the tools, mindset, knowledge, and you will learn that you are not alone.
Avoid the pitfalls that ex-international students have made, get clear about your skill set and set expectations which will help you achieve your dreams. As an international student the most valuable resource is time. More than money, time is an asset in New Zealand. The clock will be ticking fast and you will have to get right into it to get things done. How do you get things done? When you know what to get done? This course is designed to help you succeed.
Make the most out of your New Zealand study experience, turn your stepping stone into a future that you always dreamt of.
