What you'll learn

  • Introduction to Organic Chemistry Alkanes and Alkyl Grorops

Course content

1 section7 lectures1h 20m total length
  • Introduction5:00

The students will have the answers to questions like

WHAT ARE  ALIPHATIC AND AROMATIC COMPOUNDS?

    WHAT ARE HYDROCARBONS?

WHAT ARE ALIPHATIC SATURATED AND UNSATURATED HYDROCARBONS?

    WHAT ARE ALKANES ?

  • STRUCTURE AND SHAPE OF METHANE -FISCHER PROJECTION FORMULA6:26

    THIS LECTURE DEALS WITH

    •TETAHEDRAL SHAPE OF METHANE MOLECULE

•3D REPRESENTATION OF A 3D MOLECULE – WEDGED AND HASHED WEDGED BONDS

    •2D REPRESENTATION OF A 3D MOLECULE

    •FISCHER PROJECTION FORMULA

THE STUDENT WOULD BE ABLE TO VISUALIZE THE SHAPE OF METHANE AND DRAW ITS FISCHER PROJECTION FORMULA.

  • STRUCTURES AND COMMON NAMES OF ALKANES15:20

BY THE TIME THIS LECTURE IS OVER, THE STUDENTS WOULD KNOW HOW TO DERIVE THE STRUCTURES OF THE VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE ALKANE SERIES FROM THAT OF METHANE IN A LOGICAL MANNER. THEY WOULD ALSO KNOW ABOUT THE COMMON NAMES OF THE LOWER ALKANES

  • ALKYL GROUPS18:09

IN THIS LECTURE, THE METHOD OF DERIVING THE STRUCTURES AND NAMES OF ALKYL GROUPS FROM ALKANES HAS BEEN DISCUSSED. THIS LECTURE WOULD HELP THE STUDENTS TO WRITE THE STRUCTURES AND NAMES OF MEMBERS OF VARIOUS OTHER SERIES OF ALIPHATIC COMPOUNDS ALSO.

  • STRUCTURES OF HIGHER ALKANES -PENTANES AND HEXANES18:50

TWO DIFFERENT METHODS OF WRITING THE STRUCTURES OF HIGHER ALKANES IS DISCUSSED IN THIS LECTURE. BY THE TIME THIS LECTURE IS OVER , THE STUDENTS WOULD BE READY TO APPLY THESE METHODS TO WRITE STRUCTURES OF HIGHER ALKANES

  • IUPAC NAMES OF ALKANES14:27

THE 5 IMPORTANT RULES OF IUPAC SYSTEM OF NOMENCLATURE IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL IN THIS LECTURE.  AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO , THE STUDENTS WOULD BE ABLE TO STRUCTURES FROM NAMES AND VICE VERSA. THEY WILL ALSO KNOW HOW TO LOGICALLY EXTEND THESE PRINCIPLES TO GIVE IUPAC NAMES TO MEMBERS OF OTHER SERIES OF COMPOUNDS ALSO

  • EXERCISE2:10

THERE ARE ARE TWO SETS OF QUESTIONS - ONE SET TO PRACTICE WRITING STRUCTURES FROM NAMES AND THE OTHER SET TO PRACTICE  WRITING NAMES FOR  STRUCTURES

Requirements

  • Basic idea about classification of organic compounds

Description

My approach to the problem of writing structures and common and IUPAC names of Alkanes and alkyl groups is highly logical and systematic. The concepts related to the shape and structure of methane, like tetrahedral shape, wedged bonds and hashed wedged bonds, 3D and 2D representations of a 3D structure and Fischer projection formula are dealt with clearly. The IUPAC system of nomenclature has been discussed in detail with several illustrations.
