We have 4 sections we will be going through together. The course is designed such that there is one section for every zoom meeting that we have.
Section 1 is just to "set up the table before we eat" so that we can get the maximum from this course. We will go over what each section is about as well as set up some ground rules and expectations.
This is my story... I'm sharing it because I want to let you know that it is ok to be vulnerable, it is ok to share your story, and it is empowering to you once you do it. This is why am I here, and why am I so excited to see you thrive in your storytelling journey.
Expectations for this course are the things that will enable you to be at your best and most receptive to this. Expectations:
1. Be You! Take it at your own pace.
2. Give yourself permission! Make a commitment to finish this course.
3. Setup is key! Dedicate a space and time you will commit to this.
Phone on Do Not Disturb
Communicate with family and friends why is this important and why they should not disturb you while taking this course.
Enjoy this alone
4. Be kind to yourself!
5. You have to do 1 section of online courses before our zoom call.
6. Attend the zoom calls!
When we are sharing our stories in zoom calls, we want for everyone's privacy to be respected. Please do not share the stories of your friends without permission.
We do not want to encourage self-harm and violence. Please see the Speaker Guidelines where you can find the do's and don'ts.
This River of Life exercise is designed to help you reflect and discover where you’ve come from. Grab a blank piece of printer paper and pens, pencils, markers (whatever you want to use to draw). Give yourself at least 30 minutes to work through it. If you need more instructions, see the worksheet attached.
In this section we will introduce storytelling and its components. We will also dive deeper into why we are doing what we are doing - and we will be going through a journey of discovering our WHY.
Why is storytelling so exciting? Where does it come from and how has civilization used it thus far? These are questions we will explore including how our human biology is wired for stories.
The world is full of noise! What do we need to master so that we can penetrate this noise, and get your story heard.
All great leaders have a "why". Why is having a "why" so important? Let's get to the bottom of this together.
We will go on a meditative journey towards discovering our why. This journey needs you to:
- Please make sure you are in a place that you won't be disturbed
- Get headphones
- Trust the process
Great job with section two! You did it!
This is the core of what we will be doing. We will cover the following:
- Analyze case examples
- Setting goals
- Creating our story
- Practicing our story
With each speech you will give, with each story you will share you will have to define the following:
What is your target audience?
What is your primary goal for your storytelling?
What is your secondary goals for your storytelling?
Time to create your story! In this section you will learn how to formulate your story using the Storytelling Alchemy Framework. This framework is designed to help you organize your story in such a way that will have the most impact. In the resource section, you will see the worksheet that can help you with the details.
There are seven different components to a powerful story:
1. The Hook: How do you grab the audience attention?
2. The Hold: How to you hold their attention? Share details of a challenge - evoke emotion - build suspense.
3. The Climax: The peak emotion of the story. The realization that made you feel "Enough is Enough".
4. The Release: This is the transition that takes place in you that will result to changes in you and the world. The big decision that you made.
5. The Alchemy: From this point, you start telling your audience how you have turned all the challenges into a source of strength and is your vision of the world, what are you ideas, what are you fighting for.
6. The Action: What do you want this audience to do differently from now on? What is the action you are inviting them to do or be? What does society need to do differently? What needs to change? What cannot continue anymore?
7. The Urgency: What is the desired impact and why we need it now?

This course is designed in two parts: Half of the course will be offered through live Zoom video calls, and half offered through pre-recorded classes here on Udemy. There will be assignments and supporting materials for you to explore, express, and flourish through this class.
There will be assignments and supporting materials for you to explore, express, and flourish through this class. YTP has always been about community and this course is no different. You will become part of YTP’s storytelling community. You will support each other and learn from each other every step of the way. At the end of the course you will become a part of the YTP’s storytelling community and be prepared to speak at future YTP events. You’ll also have the opportunity to share your story on the TEDed platform for changemakers who are interested.
There are two mistakes you can make -- Not to start and not to finish. The expectation is that you will show up to all live zoom classes as well as do the pre-recorded classes in advance.
