It’s estimated that around 10% of people suffer with some kind of impulse control disorder. With the current lockdown restrictions many people are suffering with impulse control issues such as buying things they don’t need, substance abuse and emotional eating. A Chinese study found that people with higher levels of self control where more resilient to mental health issues during the pandemic.
Emotional eating is a common problem. Many people use substances to make themselves feel better and food is one of them. Emotional eating is using food to alleviate boredom, reduce stress and anxiety or to reward yourself for something. Emotional eaters often reach for junk food, sugary treats and other comforting but unhealthy foods. You might reach for chocolate when you’re feeling depressed, bored or lonely.
Emotional eating usually makes us feel worse, the original emotional issue remains but you probably feel guilty for eating too much junk. Regular overeating obviously causes weight gain which leads to health and appearance issues.
Relying on food or substances to cope with our emotions can stop us connecting with our emotions learning what they are trying to tell us and finding healthier ways to deal with them. No emotions are bad, we feel them for a purpose, anxiety can help us get out of dangerous situations, anger can help us defend our boundaries. It’s trying to suppress emotions that causes problems.
External events do not cause feelings. No one can make you feel an emotion. Using CBT we can identify what our emotions are and start to combat them.
This exercise will show you how emotional eating is a process, by changing one part of the process we can change the whole process.
