A little intro on the goal of this course, our teaching principles and what we'll be covering.
Before we get into the car, let's talk about getting our hands on one and finding a place to practice.
If you don't have a way to get your hands on a stick shift car, don't worry. We've got you covered with some alternatives.
Location is very often overlooked. With everything else considered, where you practice will make the biggest difference.
Once we get into the car, seating position in a stick shift car becomes unbelievably crutial.
The gear pattern is pretty universal and very straight forward. The best way get use to it is to practice the motions as deliberately as possible while the car is off.
I'll go over the basic mechanics of pulling off from a dead stop. Having an understanding of these mechanics is the building blocks of exposing proper starting principles.
Here I demonstrate pulling off in first gear
When you're carefully lifting off the clutch in search of the friction point, you may end up finding it and maintaining position with undesirable results. Sometimes the car just doesn't pick up enough. Here's what to do.
Clutching in is important when coming to a complete stop. Remember that while going over this great exercise to refine your clutch work.
So far we've been practicing pulling off with the clutch alone. Now it's time to incorporate the gas for a faster, more efficient start.
Changing gears is probably the most simple part of driving a stick shift and it's the funnest. The technique is pretty simple and very mechanical.
Downshifting works the same way shifting up in gear works except for a very unique property that we will address here.
We are moving on to a more in-dept look at downshifting with a thorough demonstration.
Now that we've learned how to pull off on a flat road, we're going to move onto hills. Hills are a whole new animal because of the extra pressure of rolling back.
Pulling off on a hill is one of the hardest and most stressful part of learning manual. Here, I demonstrate some common failure points and exercises you can use to refine the technique shown.
Reverse is similar in mechanics to first gear, but the application of reverse makes it's use pretty unique. Here is a good explanation of the concept.
The best way to practice reverse is in a realistic scenario because it's application is drastically chanced. Here is a good example of how reverse is used in parking.
Here are some closing thoughts. I offer private lessons. If you're in my area and interested in booking some lessons, please feel free to check out my profile and visit my website.
