In this section, we will look at the various tools and resources you can use to create your own tshirt designs. It’s highly important to keep the costs of your designs low in order to make a profit. We will discuss how you can create designs for little or no cost.
In order to create your own designs, you will need a photo editor, text or fonts, and royalty free images. If you are already a designer, and have other tools such Photoshop, feel free to use this. But I'm going to show you another program similar to Photoshop that you can download for free to create and edit your designs.
In this lecture, we will take a look at one of the most popular websites to get royalty free images. Whenever downloading images online, you have to make sure you have the rights to use it. Many websites are available where you can purchase images and licenses for your shirts such as Shutterstock.
But I wanted to introduce you to a image site where you can get royalty free images for free called Pixabay. Pixabay has thousands of royalty free images to help you get started with your t-shirt business.
In this lecture, we will look at one of my favorite places to get text or fonts for my t-shirt designs. I have been using this website for years, and I love the many variations you can create with the text graphics and designs. The site is called Cool Text, and it’s a free online text graphics generator. You can create your text design on the cool text website, then download the PNG file of the text image to edit in GIMP. Many of my designs are simply text statements or sayings, without an any images or photos. Sometimes just simple text on a t-shirt can sell very well.
In this lecture, we will download and discuss a free photo editor called GIMP. GIMP is a great free tool that you can use to edit your designs when starting your t-shirt business. It lacks many features that are included with an advanced image editor like photoshop, but GIMP has everything you need to start creating t-shirt designs for free. If you plan to sell on Merch by Amazon, you can even download a t-shirt design template specifically created to be used with GIMP.
One of the biggest concerns most people have about starting a t-shirt business is where to get shirt designs. In this section, we’re diving into the top websites for sourcing high-quality t-shirt designs tailored for your print-on-demand business!
Running a successful print-on-demand operation means you need standout, custom designs to make your products pop—but if you’re not a graphic designer, that can feel like a challenge.
Fortunately, there are plenty of platforms out there where you can hire talented designers to bring your ideas to life.
Prices and quality can differ widely, so your choice will depend on factors like your budget, timeline, and the complexity of the designs you’re after. Join me as I walk you through my favorite go-to sites for purchasing t-shirt designs that’ll elevate your print-on-demand game!
Fiverr is probably the easiest and cheapest, but also the most risky place to purchase designs that we will discuss. The designs are typically cheaper on Fiverr, but you also have to watch out for copycats and people stealing designs from others. Make sure you research each designer you plan to use, and make sure they are a trusted source.
That being said, Fiverr still has many excellent designers to work with. I recommend finding and favoriting trusted designers to use on future projects as well.
Now let’s take a look at another great place you can find designers for your t-shirts designs. Upwork can connect you with some great freelancers to help with your designs. All you have to do is post a description of the job you have, and Upwork will analyze your needs and connect you with the best candidates. One of the main differences between Upwork and Fiverr is that the freelancers are screened to make sure you get quality work and designs each time. Upwork offers both hourly and fixed-price contracts, giving you more control over how you pay.
In this lecture, we will go over the process to purchase t-shirt designs from 99Designs. 99 Designs has been around for awhile, and is a trusted source for quality freelancers. Although it can be on the more expensive side, you will be able to select your favorite design from a range of designers. You can actually hold a contest for designers, and you can select the winner and the design you like the best.
Similar to 99designs, DesignCrowd lets students launch design contests or hire designers directly. It’s user-friendly and offers a range of pricing options, which is perfect for students on a budget. The platform’s global designer pool ensures diverse styles, ideal for creating eye-catching t-shirt graphics.
Dribbble is a portfolio driven platform that's packed with creative professionals specializing in apparel design. You can search for designers, view their work, and hire them through a “Hire Me” feature or direct messaging. It’s excellent for finding high-quality, trendy designs, though pricing depends on individual negotiations.
In this section, we will go over how to perform market research for you t-shirt business, find keywords to use in your product listing, and ways to check for trademarks. Market research is how you find out current trends, what’s popular and customer demand for products.
In order to succeed, you have to know your niche and what they are looking for. For each design you create, you have to perform adequate research in three different areas. The three areas we will be going over are niche or market research, Keyword and SEO research, and also trademark research .
Each design you create should be in a market that has enough demand, your t-shirt listing should have good keywords to increase SEO, and your images and text must be free of trademarks and copyrights.
There are many places both online and offline where you can get ideas for your shirt designs. This can range from hearing about a new trend all the kids are doing at school from your little nephew, to researching the latest trending topics using online resources.
Remember to keep an open mind when brainstorming shirt designs, inspiration can come from anywhere. Some of my favorite places online to get ideas are Google Trends, Amazon, and Social Media platforms.
In the previous lecture, you should have brainstormed some possible niches for your shirt designs, and niched down to sub and micro niches.
In this lecture, we will be going over how to research the niches on your list to find the best opportunities on Google Trends. Google trends is a very useful tool that allows you to see the current trend and other valuable information on any topic. We will go through your main, sub and micro niches to check popularity and demand. We want to research the current trends to see how many people are searching for and are interesting in a particular market.
In this lecture, we will take a look at another method to research markets for your shirt designs. One of the best ways to research what niches and products are actually selling the best is to check the largest online retailer, which is of course Amazon. Amazon is a great resource for you to use when researching markets and products to see what products are in demand.
Each item on Amazon has a BSR, also known as best seller rank, which gives you an indication of how quickly an item is selling. In order to check a product’s BSR, you have to click on the product and search the information on the product listing.
This free keyword research tool utilizes the latest Google search data to deliver accurate keyword results. Simply enter a keyword or website URL that’s relevant to your product or design, and get hundreds of keywords and phrases tailored to the item you are selling.
One of the best ways to get the best performing keywords to add to your t-shirt listings is to actually spy on the competition. You can easily check and see which shirt designs in a particular market is selling the best by researching the designs on Merch by Amazon. Merch by Amazon is a new program that allows designers to upload their artwork and sell them using the ‘print on demand’ service.
In this lecture, we will go over how to search your competitor's top selling designs, and see which keywords are working for them. Amazon is the largest online retailer, and one of the best places to research markets, niches and products.
After you purchase or create your designs, and before you start selling them, you always want to make sure the design isn’t trademarked by someone else. Most designers you purchase from online are honest, but there are many who will steal designs from others as well.
It’s recommended to use the most reputable designer you can find or afford to avoid any problems. You want to find images that are royalty free or that are able to be used under the creative commons license.
Creative commons is a range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. You always want to perform trademark research to avoid any future legal issues. The best way to check trademarks and copyrights is to hire a IP Attorney, but there is a simple check you can perform online to initially research trademarks for designs on your own.
In this section, we’ll be going over how to perform niche & product research for your print-on-demand products with Merch Informer.
Merch Informer is one of the best tools available for online sellers to perform niche research, analyze competition, find keywords, check for trademarks, and tons more.
Using sales data gathered from the Merch by Amazon platform, Merch Informer allows you to get an inside view of which topics, styles, and design types customers are actually purchasing.
With advanced data analysis, you can see exactly what type of designs you should be creating for your products to help you get an advantage over the competition.
Merch Informer is an all-in-one tool for anything from product & niche research to trademark protection for your Merch by Amazon business.
We will be performing niche research by using the 'Product Research' tool in Merch Informer. The Product Research tools allows you to view detailed information for the products being sold on the Merch by Amazon marketplace. This is one of the easiest methods to find niches for Merch by Amazon designs.
But not only can these tools be used for Merch By Amazon, but also any other print-on-demand marketplace you may sell on. Research top niches for Merch by Amazon, Teespring, Redbubble or anywhere else merch is sold.
In this lecture, we’ll be going over how to perform niche research for your print on demand products using the new Merch Informer Niche Hunter tool.
Merch Informer is one of the best tools available to build and grow your print-on-demand business. Merch Informer allows you to perform niche research, product research, analyze competition, and even check for trademarks.
Merch Informer recently released a new tool called Niche Hunter that allows Merch by Amazon (and other print on demand sellers) to easily research niches using sales data gathered on Amazon.
With the Merch Informer Niche Hunter tool, print on demand sellers can view the most searched keywords & phrases on Merch by Amazon, top products for each niche, monthly sales volume, competition score and much more.
In this section, we will go over how to get started with Merch by Amazon. Merch by Amazon is a relatively new platform that allows designers to upload their t-shirt designs, and Amazon will use their ‘print on demand’ service to fulfill customer orders.
Merch by Amazon is an amazing program that allows you to easily sell your t-shirt designs without having to purchase or store any inventory. This is a new program, and constantly making changes and improvements.
The goal is to continue making sales in order to continuing tiering up. The higher your tier, the more shirts you can have live on Amazon, which should result in increased sales.
In this section, we will go over how to request an invitation to join the Merch by Amazon program. Merch by Amazon is an invitation only platform, and requires approval from the Amazon team before you can join. I recommend apply to merch by amazon as soon as possible, because it could actually takes months before you are accepted.

The most important thing to focus on when starting out on Merch by Amazon is tiering up. When starting out, don’t worry much about your royalties and profits. Your main goal is to tier up quickly until you have the ability to upload hundreds or thousands of shirt designs on the Merch by Amazon platform.
Once you have tested out various designs and tiered up to higher level, you can then raise prices on shirts with good BSR rankings and increase your royalties.
Merch by Amazon is a long term platform, not a get rich quick scheme. It will take time to tier up and build your business on the platform.
Teespring has been a staple company in the print-on-demand market, and is one of the best places to build an ecommerce shop to sell t-shirts, coffee mugs, hoodies, and dozens of other quality print on demand products.
Recently, Teespring has gone through a massive rebranding, not only changing it’s site URL and brand name to Spring, but also revamping the layout and function of their website.

When you create your Teespring listings, it's important to keep optimization in mind for each design you add to your Teespring store. Optimizing your Teespring listings will improve your SEO, search rankings, and help customers find your print on demand products.
In this tutorial, we will go over the process to add Google Analytics to your Teespring store. By connecting Teespring with Google Analytics, you will be able to view valuable data that can help you build your business and increase sales.
Google Analytics allows you to view information such as audience insights, behavior, page views, traffic sources, and tons of other highly valuable data. Using the data you gather, you can see which products on Teespring are performing the best.
The Teepring platform not only provides you with the tools you need to create and upload designs, but also allows you to track your analytics and sales by adding conversion tracking codes. Conversion tracking allows you to analyze your sales data and get insight into the habits, interests and characteristics of your customers.
This information allows you to create laser targeted marketing campaigns to get more customers similar to the one’s that have already purchased from your store. Teespring allows you to easily integrate tracking codes from multiple sites, including facebook, google and twitter.
In this lecture, we will be going over the process of adding the Facebook Pixel to your Teespring account.
What makes Teespring such a great platform, is all the tools that they provide to not only create your designs, but also the marketing and promotional services they provide to help you sell more designs.
In this lecture, we’ll be going over how to create promo codes to offer discounts on your Teespring products. It’s been shown that promo codes can help boost your conversion rates by up to 60%. You can create Teespring promo codes by going to the 'Promotions' tab from your Teespring account menu.
There are two ways customers can use promo codes on Teespring. One method is for customers to add the promo code during the checkout process when purchasing from your Teespring store. You could also create a promotion URL that customers can click to be taken directly to your Teespring product with the discount applied. A promotional URL works great when added to marketing content that promotes your Teespring products to your audience.
In this section, we will discuss how to get started with selling your designs on Redbubble.
Anyone can sign up for Redbubble, and you don’t need an invitation like merch by Amazon. Similar to Teespring, Redbubble allow you to sell your designs on t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, and many other types of products.
Redbubble gives you complete control over your artwork, and allows you to set your own profit margins for your products. The retail price of your products will be calculated by the base price, or production cost, plus your selected profit margin.
Redbubble is a great sales channel to add your designs to, because they have their own marketplace with active customers searching for products. After you sign up for your Redbubble account, simply upload your design to the platform, and setup your product listing.
Similar to teespring, you can then choose which product to add your designs to. Once you publish your products, they will then be listed on the Redbubble marketplace. As customers purchase, Redbubble will handle the transaction process, print your design on the product, and deliver the item to the customer. They will also provide customer service if there are any issues.
In this video, we will go over the process to set up your Redbubble shop. Your Redbubble store setup will include adding your Redbubble avatar (profile image), cover image, and updating your artist bio.
You will also learn how to create a custom cover image for your Redbubble shop with the recommended dimensions. Redbubble cover images should be 2400 x 600 pixels, and in JPEG or PNG format.
Earlier in the course, you should have already either purchased a shirt design, or created your own design using the tools and resources we discussed. In this lecture, we will go over the process to upload your first design to the Redbubble platform. This includes how to add new work to your Redbubble shop, create your product listing, edit designs on each Redbubble product, resize images, enable / disable products, and more!
Redbubble makes it easy for you to upload and sell your designs to customers, so you can spend your time focusing on your artwork and creating quality designs. We also went over how to perform keyword research in a previous section of the course. You will need your keyword list in order to optimize your product listing to increase your search engine rankings and visibility to customers.
If you already sell on Merch by Amazon or Teespring, you can find your best selling design there, and start by uploading that one to the Redbubble platform. You can also use the same title and description, if they are already keyword optimized.
How to Add Redbubble Tags & Keywords | Optimize Your Product Listings
In this Redbubble tutorial, we’ll be going over how to add and optimize keywords & tags to your Redbubble artwork. Adding good tags to your designs on Redbubble will help customers find your designs while searching on Redbubble, and other search engines like Google.
Redbubble tags are basically keywords that define what your design is about, and provides the search terms associated with your designs that people can search for to find your work. We will go through the process of how to add tags to new Redbubble uploads, as well as editing the designs that are already available in your Redbubble store.
Learn how to create product collections to organize the designs in your Redbubble shop. This includes how to add your designs, titles & descriptions, and how to select a collection cover image for your collection. If you have designs for multiple niches, Redbubble collections are a great way to group those designs together and organize your portfolio.
In this tutorial, we will be going over how to select or change the default view for the products in your Redbubble Shop. You have the ability to change the default view of the products in your shop to any item you want to display.
You will learn how to select a default view when adding new artwork in the Redbubble uploader, how to change the default view for existing products in your shop, and how to change the default view for multiple products at the same time in bulk.
When customers visit your Redbubble shop, the default product view you've selected for each product will be shown.
How To Change Prices On Redbubble
In this Redbubble tutorial, we will go over how to change the prices of your existing works on Redbubble. Updating prices on Redbubble can be done by going into your 'Account Settings' menu and selecting 'Product Pricing' under your artist tools. Here you can increase or decrease the markup percentage for any product type in your Redbubble shop.
There is no commission charge or fees to list your designs on the Redbubble marketplace, but each item you sell will have a base price which is deducted from the the total revenue. The remaining payment will be your profit for the sale.
When you update your markup percentage, the new margin will update the retail price of the product in your Redbubble shop, and your profit per sale. By default, each item you list will have a price markup that is 20% more than the base price, but you can change this at anytime.
In this section, we’ll be going over how to get started on the popular print-on-demand platform Spreadshirt. Spreadshirt is an easy to use print on demand platform that allows you to upload your own custom designs to a variety of products, similar to Redbubble. Not only can you create your own custom products, but also add your product listings to the Spreadshirt marketplace. This gives you access to an audience of thousands of shoppers that are already on the Spreadshirt platform searching for merch and other accessories to purchase.
