DISCLAIMER
The exercise mentioned here is what helped me unravel my performance anxiety. Because there is a psychological element to this exercise, I must state that I am not a psychologist, nor do I claim to be one. So please take this information at your own discretion. If you are interested in regulation there is a lot of literature on it online.
Now that we have completed the Onion exercise we can jump to working on our Worst Case Scenario and Plan B solution! Please refer to the same handout as in previous lecture.
To close this section we will have a brief look into validation and authority and how giving it away affects your ability to communicate and perform.
Questions:
Am I giving my authority away when engaging with others (in what situations, to whom)?
Am I seeking validation from others (in what situations, to whom)?
Summary:
Accept discomfort - not everyone will like you, and that's not your problem.
Seek validation and acceptance from yourself
Maintain respect for authority (boss, etc), however keep your own boundaries and authority (self containment/ self respect) to ensure you don't compromise on your boundaries or give in to pressure when you feel you shouldn't.
Translated to public speaking it means you won't be intimidated by your audience (they're smarter than me, they're judging me...) you will accept them as they are because you are maintaining your own sense of self worth (authority).
Exercise: review your recorded video and observe your breathing (consistent, shallow, chesty, from the diaphragm), also observe how your breath is affecting your speech flow.
Please download handout for entire section here.
The importance of breathing well:
Helps you regulate your nerves
Contributes to smooth speech delivery
Helps you control your volume and vocal projection
Gives you stamina so you can talk for longer without tiring

Speak with a supported, confident voice that keeps your audience engaged
Reduce and control public speaking anxiety using breath and body awareness
Improve articulation and clarity
Use body language and movement that reinforces confidence and authority
Feel grounded and present during presentations and meetings
To move in the space or stage you are on with confidence
These tools can be applied to:
Work presentations
Business meetings
Interviews
On-camera speaking
Everyday professional communication
WHY ACTOR TECHNIQUE'S IMPROVE PUBLIC SPEAKING
Actors are trained to engage their audience by taking them into the world of the play through their character. In order to do this trained theatre actors spend three years developing their:
Voices for projection, strength, volume and clarity
Movement/ gesture/ physical transformation abilities
Stage craft & stage presence
Facial expressiveness
Articulation / accent / pronunciation
Not to mention they learn to channel their fear into usable energy in order to perform under pressure
These same skills are essential for effective public speaking and presentations.
HOW THIS COURSE IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PUBLIC SPEAKING COURSES
This course tackles the fundamentals of public speaking through comprehensive exercises that come directly from drama school and professional experience. You will learn skills that only professional actors know.
To help you choose your coach, look at it this way:
A professional actor and coach with corporate experience vs. a coach with only corporate experience…
As a trained actor with 15 years of additional industry experience in theatre, film, TV, voice over and presenting, I still use my training on a daily basis - and I want to share some of what I do, as I know that trained actors have the most comprehensive understanding of public speaking, audience engagement and charisma on command.
With my additional experience in the corporate world working in sales and marketing I understand the kind of pressures you face when presenting or negotiating your ideas and opinions. This has helped me shape this course to your needs, as working professionals, and not as actors.
IMPORTANT NOTE
This course does not use slides or graphics. It is presenter led with comprehensive exercises and breakdowns. You will most benefit from this course if you watch the video then do the subsequent exercise from the handouts provided.
These exercises generally need to be repeated daily until you feel they have become second nature to you. Rome wasn’t conquered in a day!

The psychological exercises mentioned in this course, particularly in the "Fear" section of this course are concepts learned by the teacher during her performing journey that helped her overcome performance fear.
