Listening to Carol's lectures is like talking to a friend, who can explain things to me in a language I can understand, not too technical, or over my head.- Alfrieda Dockery

By the end of this course, you will have the foundational knowledge to decide on the best social media platforms for you and how best to use them in a timely way. You'll learn to use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, GooglePlus, and Pinterest. Then you will also learn to curate and share content using Paperli. Finally, you will connect your social media accounts using Hootsuite so that you can easily and quickly build relationships online. You will also become more comfortable using Youtube.

Most of the videos are a bit longer, some up to 30 minutes. Many of them were originally presented as live webinars. As such, the audio quality is a bit tinny, but totally understandable. Watch the lectures one by one, or choose the ones that you need help with first. If you aren't sure where to spend your time on social media, or you want a basic understanding of each of the possible options, this course is for you. The three short videos are a little harder to hear.

Who this course is for:
  • Non-technical, time-challenged people who want to know about the different social media platforms.
  • Those with some basic knowledge of social media who want to learn some of the best practices and time-saving tips.

Facebook is probably one of the most popular social media networks and allows you to interact with friends and family and share photos, all from one location. Facebook Pages are used for businesses and brands and can access the large following that Facebook has.

These videos were originally part of a webinar series, so the upcoming topic mentioned at the end of each video may not always be the next one in your Udemy course list.

Some Facebook Tips

Since social media changes constantly these are some of my thoughts on how I use my time: Facebook can really be a time suck, so I try to watch how long I'm there and do specific tasks so I don't get distracted. Then if I have free time, I interact with people. I have tried paying to have an event promoted on Facebook, but it didn't do very well. It only cost me $5, and did bring some extra people to my Facebook page, but no one registered for the event as a result, so I won't try that again. One of the things that seems most successful on Facebook is to start a group and regularly add tips and interact with the members. As with all social media platforms, it takes time to get to know people and build relationships before you begin to see results. And rather than selling, indirectly talk about what you're doing. For instance, I could say "one of my students was so happy when she learned to send out her first email newsletter." That tells people I do training about email newsletters, without actually coming out and saying 'hire me'.

Facebook Pages and Marketing

This is an interview I did with Facebook expert Stacey Myers where she answers my questions about using Facebook Groups rather than your Facebook page.

LinkedIn is a business social media platform and allows you to connect with key people and influencers as you share your skills and knowledge.

Most small businesses consider LinkedIn as the most essential social media platform of all, but it isn't that easy to build relationships there. If you can make an initial connection on LinkedIn and then get to know them better on Facebook or Twitter, that will often work best.

Using Linked In Endorsements

This video covers * Your LinkedIn Profile * Sharing * Groups * Pages * Tips.

If you customize your LinkedIn profile website name, it's an easy way to increase your visibility and make it easier for people to find you in the search engines. Yet not many people realize they can edit that part of their profile.

I encourage you to try joining and participating in a LinkedIn Group as well. That's one simple way to share your expertise with a number of people.Plus, if you want to meet someone you don't know, being in a group with that person makes an introduction possible. Connect with a few more people each week and before you know it, your circle of influence will have grown.

Pinterest is an image based social media platform and is steadily gaining in popularity, especially among women.

As well as images, quotes and mindmaps are also popular visuals on Pinterest. And the best part is the fact that every time someone re-pins your content, the link to your website goes with it.

This Pinterest bonus tutorial talks about how photographer Bridget Greenwood creates her boards. Bridget likes to work on her boards in the evening and uses them to keep track of ideas and recipes as well as using Pinterest to promote her photography and her husband's construction business.

Pinning videos is easy to do. You don't have to put it them the video category where your videos might get lost amongst all the others. Instead, create a board of your own just for your videos.

+ Twitter

Twitter is a social media platform that allows you to interact with people from all over the world, any time of day, all in short comments called 'tweets'.

The media certainly seem to love Twitter. Hardly a day goes by when there isn't a news station asking you to tweet your comments about their programs. For current events, Twitter gets the news to the people faster than any newspaper reporter ever could. And thanks to Twitter, people in other countries now have a voice
and a way to show people the real conditions where they live.

Twitter is also great for the rest of us, especially as a customer service and customer research tool. Once you learn the terminology and get used to the character restraints, you can share tips, comments and links to articles and websites.

By focusing on what your audience likes/wants/needs to hear and aiming to create a personal connection, it is possible to build some great relationships.

Imagine Twitter was a dance hall in the 1960's. This skit will explain some of the aspects of Twitter from a different perspective. Join Sally Social and Wanda Workerbee as they show you what you should and shouldn't be doing on the Twitter platform.

3 lectures 18:28 is a web program that allows you to curate content from the Internet and from your Twitter following and publish it into a topic specific online newspaper or magazine. They have a free or paid version, and the paid version allows you to insert your own ads as well as creating a custom newsletter to send to your email list.

Start with the free version and see how you like it. You can also experiment with how often you publish and can
easily switch from daily to weekly.

Is a social media platform that was new to you? I'm really not sure if it should be considered more a tool than a platform, but it's a great way to curate information and share it without having to do a lot of work.

It's pretty exciting that we can publish our own newspapers, without a lot of expense or effort. I found that in the beginning, I had to keep a closer eye on the topics that were published since some of them weren't the types of content I wanted to be associated with my name. But once I weeded out the people, or websites, that weren't the right reporters for me and added those that I knew would add real value, my newspaper took very little time on my part.

Good luck in your publishing journey and if you want to send me a link to your new paper, I'd love to see it!

+ Organizing Your Social Media
3 lectures 17:22

Hootsuite is a web based application that allows you to access all of your social media platforms from one control panel. You design the columns you need and can make it as simple or as complicated as you choose. If you have more than one website, you still only need one Hootsuite account, but if you want more than five social media platforms on it, you'll need their paid version.

And be sure to make use of the little Hootlet by putting it up on your Internet toolbar. Then whenever you come across a website that you want to share with others, it's push button simple.

Update: Facebook no longer allows you to add your Newsfeed to Hootsuite for a personal Facebook profile. You can only add a Facebook stream that shows the posts you yourself have added to your personal Facebook account, along with any comments for those posts.

Although not a social media platform itself, Hootsuite allows you to access and interact with all of your social media accounts from one central dashboard. It saves loads of time and can be automated a certain amount. Don't be intimidated when you see all of the columns I've set up on my Hootsuite account. You can have as few or as many as you like. Start small until you get the hang of it. My eyes glaze over when I see a spreadsheet, so if I can do this,Hootsuite isn't as hard as it looks.
