Welcome to the SketchBook everyday Series of courses. In this second course, you will learn how to draw and paint 5 different leaves using watercolors.
My name is Mandar, a fine Artist and a sculptor. I will be leading you through this course.
I've designed this course for the artist in you who wants to improve your art but has limited time to practice. SketchBook is your best place to practice and hone your skills. It’s your private space; and your aim here is not to produce a gallery ready painting but to try out new things, have fun and improve your art.
In this course we will draw and paint 5 different leaves having different colors, shapes and textures. By doing simple sketches like this every day you will learn to draw things in a simplistic manner, understand the light & shade; and gain the confidence to use watercolors more effectively. Painting like this will give you the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful every time.
I’ll show you how to draw an outline of each leaf using a pencil and then how to paint it with watercolors. This simple method of painting gives best results and improves artistic confidence very quickly.
This way of practicing is great for people who want to do something creative everyday and also for those who want to pursue art, as a career. As I paint, I'll also be talking to you about my process and you will see every line that I draw and every brush stroke that I make.
This course is for you, if you want to improve your art and are willing to spend at least 15 minutes every day, practicing. It doesn't matter if you are a student, a professional, a homemaker or a retired person. No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having the interest is enough.
I look forward to seeing you inside the class.
Here we take a look at the materials I will be using in this course for drawing and painting with watercolors.
In this lecture I demonstrate how I draw/sketch a peepal leaf and then paint it with watercolors. I also talk about which type of brushes I use and why I paint in a certain way.
In this lecture I demonstrate how I draw/sketch a banana leaf and then paint it with watercolors. I also talk about which type of brushes I use and why I paint in a certain way.
In this lecture I demonstrate how I paint Lotus leaves with watercolors. I also talk about which type of brushes I use and why I paint in a certain way.
In this lecture I demonstrate how I draw/sketch a Oak and Maple leaves and then paint those with watercolors. I also talk about which type of brushes I use and why I paint in a certain way.
Now that you have seen me paint 5 different leaves, it's time for a project for you. Look at the leaves of any plant or tree in your home or backyard and try making a watercolor sketch of one of the leaves. Though painting based on a real object is best, use a photograph to make things a bit convenient for you.
If you feel a little more adventurous, paint multiple leaves next to each other or paint a complete branch.
While doing all this, remember that you are not creating a painting for exhibiting in any gallery. So relax, take a deep breath and enjoy the process of sketching and painting. Do not worry about the outcome.
Even if your painting turns out not so good looking, you have learnt something in the process and you will get better with practice. Do this as a ritual for a week and see your progress for yourself.
Me and your fellow students are all eager to see what you're painting, so share some photos of your work with us.
I request you to post a review for this class and tell me things, that you think, can make this course even better.
I also want you to tell me what you would like to learn in the future classes in this series.
Thank you and Happy painting!
This is a bonus lecture for you. We'll be drawing and painting Monstera leaf in this lecture.
[Updated 10 June 2023: Added a bonus video of painting Monstera leaf in watercolor.]
