This course is all of the elements that make up the foundation of singing in my own words. My goal is to give you an online resource - so that these fundamentals are just a click away. Consider this a starting point. You will adjust your technique as you learn more about your voice. For instance, here you will learn about breathing for singing. Once you master the singer’s breath that I show you, you will likely adjust the way you breathe over time. This course gives you a healthy place to start. Okay, now we’re ready. Here are the topics I will be covering in my Singing Foundation Course: Singing Posture, Breathing for Singing, Music Fundamentals, Discovering your Vocal Range, How to Warm Up Your Voice, Vocal health, and Performing with Confidence.
Because our body is our instrument, having good posture for singing is crucial to having a healthy voice. Oftentimes, vocal strain can be alleviated when we take a look in the mirror and adjust the way we are carrying ourselves. I recommend singing in front of a mirror while you practice or take videos of yourself singing, so that you can see your posture. Secondly, focusing on posture gives you more awareness of your body, a valuable skill in singing that cannot be stressed enough.
Our breath is what vibrates our vocal folds to make a sound when we are singing or speaking. Taking unrestricted breaths and knowing how to engage with our airflow is not only healthy as a singer, it can be transformative. Allowing our breath to carry our sound not only prevents vocal fatigue, it gives our voice a rich and free sound.
There are two fundamentals of music that every singer should have a basic understanding of, but it doesn’t require you to learn how to read music, at first. Here are the basics of pitch and rhythm.
Your vocal range, sometimes called your voice type, is intended to classify where your voice feels most comfortable. I’m going to tell you about the most commonly referenced voice types, but there are more. Bass voices are the lowest singers, Tenor voices are second lowest, Altos or Mezzo Sopranos are second highest, and sopranos are the highest voices. Knowing if you are a Bass, Tenor, Alto, or Soprano is helpful at the beginning of your singing journey because it may help you learn more about your individual range and what songs are most conducive to your growth.
Warming up our singing voice helps us sing safely, because it gradually prepares us to sing throughout our range and gives us the chance to focus on the way our breath supports the transition from our low, middle, and high range as smoothly as possible. Warming up your voice also trains your breath to control your voice’s flexibility, precision, and more. You can even improve your listening skills and sense of pitch just by consistently warming up your voice.
Now that you understand the basics of singing, here are 10 ways to take care of your delicate vocal folds.
Here are 10 ways to ensure that you perform with confidence.
