Volunteer rangers donate time to safeguard community well-being and safety. They liaise between participants, the community, and organizers, monitor existential threats, and use mediation and de-escalation training.
Explain the ranger organization structure, including dirt rangers, kaki, rod, and board of directors on call, and the role of social capital, its deposits, and how dumb moves erode trust.
Rangers emphasize visibility and approachability, helping participants and solving problems rather than enforcing rules. They mediate sound disputes, manage perimeters and fire safety, coordinate radios, and guide sanctuary.
Learn how to apply the flame framework to conflict situations by observing for safety, listening actively, analyzing information, mediating with neutrality, and explaining resolutions to participants while protecting privacy.
The ranger approach begins with safety and scene assessment by two rangers. Then enter with a friendly, nonjudgmental stance, lower lights, remove sunglasses, and meet at eye level.
Practice active listening by focusing on the speaker, slowing your speech, and paraphrasing to restate what the speaker says without adding anything for accuracy.
Rangers must promptly report all must report incidents, including non-consensual violence, abuse, sexual assault, medical or psychiatric emergencies, using the board's ICS procedures, with on-site Khaki support and post-shift logging.
Adopt the incident command system developed by FEMA to coordinate with external resources during incidents. Listen to khaki on scene, stay until released, and use TAC one or TAC two.
Master radio use by planning your message, listening for others, and delivering concise transmissions with a clear call sign, location, and action requests.
Emphasize balancing hard rules with flexible judgment in ranger work, defer to a partner or call khaki, know triggers, and ask for help to protect participants.

Rangers keep an eye out for safety at the event; committed to aiding members of the community and facilitating a good time. Rangers are not enforcers or a security force, in fact this role is great for those with decent people skills. You will be roaming the event in teams, participating actively in the event, with added responsibility for a time, and a radio. Ranger’s must have a straight head and be willing to listen to people. They are identified by their khaki shirts.
Sideburn Rangers are modelled on Black Rock Rangers, a group that was founded in 1992 to help participants at Burning Man. Every sanctioned Burning Man regional event has Rangers who operate in similar, but not identical ways.
