Learn how to pick the right sewing pattern size to minimize alterations and fit your body, guided by Ariana Bauer, a seasoned garment sewing instructor.
Learn key body measurements for selecting sewing patterns, including high bust, full bust, full hip, natural waist, front bust, across back, and high hip, plus tape alignment tips.
Understand wearing ease and design ease in sewing patterns. Learn how blocks and slopers shape sizing, and how woven or knit fabrics influence ease for fit.
Practice selecting pattern sizes by matching full bust, high bust, and waist to the size chart when buying or downloading patterns, using blending to adjust the waist.
Choose a size based on your measurements and the knit's stretch, then apply a full or small bust adjustment if the bust doesn't fit, or adjust the size for ease.
Measure bodice and dress blocks from neck to hem, armhole to waist, and side seams; apply wearing ease, and double width measurements to obtain bust, waist, hip, and hem circumferences.
Learn how to measure the hip on a pattern without a marked hip line, including calculating waist and waistband width, subtracting seam allowances, and accounting for pleats.
Copy large pattern pieces in sections on a lightbox, mark sizes 18 to 16 with match points along side seam, then blend and true the pattern for a smooth transition.
Separate the pattern pieces and tape them to wide paper. Use a light box or window to copy all markings, blend lines, and store patterns in envelopes.
