Well, there isn't a single "universal" English, as it rather exists in various forms. And, when people refer to "international" or "global", they often mean a form of English that is widely used for communication between speakers of different native languages.

In this context, British and American English together with others contribute to what is often called International or Global English.

There are few distinctions mostly in accents, and vocabulary between British and American English for example. Knowing them might be useful but not quite necessary. English speakers around the world generally understand each other. And there is also a tendency to follow a neutral accent, that's easily understood by everyone and uses standardized forms of language, which smoothes global communication.

But of course, it depends on your goals if you need to dive into language nuances. If you're aiming for an English exam, university admission, or professional use, paying attention to spelling and grammar can become crucial. And if you’re already living in an English-speaking country you're simply embracing the local form. Your interactions with international clients or colleagues can also guide your choice.

And of course, you can find the type of English that is just more appealing to you. In that case, it would make sense to concentrate on one type to minimize confusion.

However, English is a fluid and dynamic language, it changes and adapts quickly. So, you don't have to entirely avoid one or the other type, and it's nearly impossible to do so. Exposure to all forms is inevitable and it enriches your language skills. And none of the types is more important. However, there just might be one that is more relevant to your goals and aligns with your objectives.
