The goal of this course, which is narrated by my husband, is to communicate with the parents or guardians of academic scholars. The thought process behind this course originated over the last 20 to 25 years. I saw educational institutions, civic organizations, news organizations, and even parental organizations, place an uneven amount of attention on sports and athletics versus scholarly pursuits.
Over the course of years, I begin to think - what about the scholars? What about the students that scored the perfect or near-perfect score on their SAT? There is no front page of the Scholars Section, like there is a Sports Section, of any newspaper published today.
One of the reasons for the news to be so focused with covering sports at a local, regional, and even national level – is because of soccer moms. Every sport has a group of involved parents who actively support their athletic child and the team that they participate with. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with these parents and their support of their student’s activities. I’m just saying that from the vantage point of the scholar, who is dedicating him or herself to scholarly pursuits instead of athletics or the arts, society even society at the local level does not value them or what they are trying to do. At least in their eyes.
A student’s teenage years are difficult enough without them having to compare themselves to others who are held in high esteem or put on a pedestal by the organizations mentioned above. So what are we as parents - whether a soccer mom or a scholar mom, to do? For one, you can make sure that you don’t ask your kids what they want to be when they grow up. But instead, ask them what problems they want to solve? This simple viewpoint change will turn the conversation around from ‘who do I to work for’, to, ‘what do I need to learn to be able to do that’.
