Description
Stories are one the most ancient teaching tools. When we read or watch stories, we can learn vital skills for understanding and living with our fellow human beings from the characters and what they experience.
In this course, there are five sections. Section one is the introduction to the course and a bit about me and my credentials.
The second section is about the tools for analyzing stories using the elements of storytelling, plot and character, given circumstances, setting, and language in written stories. In visual stories, there are technical elements such as, lighting, costumes and makeup, sound, and music.
Section three gives basic questions anyone can use to discuss any story. I also give resources for further exploration, and how to organize your thinking about a story.
Section four is all about the benefits of analyzing stories. There are six skills we can learn from them, such as better communication, critical thinking and understanding human behavior and emotions. We can also learn to deepen our compassion, empathy and emotional intelligence from the characters, what they experience, and the decisions they make.
Section five is the course wrap-up. There is also a section with two extra videos suggesting of 10 classic films for further exploration that are still relevant today.
Who this course is for:
- Teachers, parents, friends and family who want to deepen learning and relationships
- This course is for anyone who wants to bridge the gap between themselves and those who are seemingly on the opposite side of any issue
Instructor
Lucinda has been a story lover for as long as she can remember. It started with family movie nights and the discussions that followed the viewing. Those discussions morphed into a love of reading. She had wise parents who used stories to teach important life lessons.
When it came time to chose college majors, Lucinda chose ones that were story driven, Religious Studies and Theatre and Speech. After a short stint in the corporate world, Lucinda went back to her love of stories and received a Masters in Theater Arts. She worked at lots of different theatre jobs in the Portland, Oregon theatre scene including acting. Eventually she began teaching drama and theatre informally, and finally at the High School and College levels.
“Working in theatre taught me how to analyze every aspect of a story down to the minutest detail. I love trying to figure out character motivations so I can understand the characters better. It has also helped me learn excellent skills for living with and interacting with others. I love passing on those skills to my students.”
