This course is designed to bring that real-world experience into a clear, concise and practical learning path. Whether you're a user from the accounting or finance team, or a new SAP consultant, my goal is to help you not just use SAP, but truly understand SAP.
In this lesson, we’ll talk about the key organizational structure that underpins everything you do in the Controlling module.
In this lesson, we’ll explore three important topics that will build the foundation for all our planning and tracking work in Controlling:
First, we’ll compare organizational structure and master data.
Second, we’ll talk about the roles and structure of cost centers.
And third, we’ll introduce internal orders, including order types and how their status is managed.
Today we have one clear goal: understand Cost Elements and see exactly how they tie Financial Accounting and Controlling together in SAP S/4HANA.
We will cover three topics, and then finish with two quick hands-on demos.
#1: What a Cost Element is.
#2: Primary versus Secondary Cost Elements – and the logic behind the split.
#3: How FI and CO integration works in S/4HANA Universal Journal.
After that we will jump into the system, first to create a Primary Cost Element / G/L account, and then to create a Secondary Cost Element.
This is our third straight lesson on Controlling master data. Master data is by far the trickiest piece in CO—everything is interconnected—but once you truly understand these objects, the rest of Controlling falls neatly into place.
Today we have three topics to cover:
#1 Profit Center.
#2 Hierarchies — first profit‑center hierarchy, then cost‑center hierarchy, including groups.
#3 Activity Types and Statistical Key Figures, or SKF for short.
Now it’s time to switch on the “postings” light. In CO we record two broad classes of postings—plan and actual—and every actual posting arrives in one of two ways: instantly, as an event-based posting, or later, during period-end processing.
We will cover all of these postings in the coming lessons, and for this lesson, let's focus on those event-based posting, which is the real-time, line-by-line stream of costs that flows through Controlling as each business event happens.
We have reached the point in our Controlling journey where the daily trickle of costs must be polished into month-end truth. In this lesson and next, we will follow that transformation step by step:
First, we will run accruals in controlling, so expenses land in the right cost object when the invoices can not.
Second, we will perform overhead distribution and allocation, which moves overhead to the places that finally own it.
This is the second part of our Controlling month-end closing journey. We’ll begin by capturing the actual quantities for our activity types and statistical key figures on cost centers. Then I'll introduce indirect activity allocation using our cafeteria example—where the corporate cafeteria serves lunches to various departments. Finally, we’ll settle our internal orders and lock the controlling period to prevent any further postings.
In this session we’ll dive into the world of planning and budgeting in Controlling, exploring four key topics that will give you a complete picture of how SAP Controlling handles your forecasts and budgets. We'll start with the important concept of Plan Category, then discuss how to populate planning data in SAP S/4, then talk about budget function in Internal order and cost center, and finally finish with other planning tools and compatibility.
In this session we turn our attention to margin and profitability analysis, also called COPA, which is a key and powerful tool for understanding which parts of your business truly drive the bottom line. We’ll cover three topics: first, the purpose of margin & profitability analysis and the two flavors of COPA—Cost-Based and Account-Based—along with a brief history of SAP’s evolution in this area; second, the org structure and important settings you work with in Cost-and Account-Based COPA, including how those postings land in our famous ACDOCA table; and third, an introduction to Profitability Segments and how you can use them as cost objects for revenue and cost postings.
In this final lesson, we’ll stay practical and laser-focused. You’ll learn two of the most important Controlling reports—Cost Center Plan/Actual and Run Profitability Report—and then we’ll drill right down to the line items behind every total so you can audit with confidence.
