Description

A warm welcome to the SAP Basis Administration with S/4HANA course by Uplatz.

What is SAP Basis?

SAP Basis is the technical foundation layer that enables all SAP applications (like SAP ERP, SAP S/4HANA, SAP CRM, etc.) to function.
The term “Basis” stands for Business Application Software Integrated Solution.

It acts as a middleware between the operating system, database, network, and the SAP applications, ensuring that the system runs efficiently, securely, and without downtime.

In simple terms:

  • If SAP were a house, SAP Basis would be the plumbing, wiring, and foundation — you don’t see it, but without it, nothing works.

What Does SAP Basis Do?

An SAP Basis administrator is responsible for:

  1. Installing and configuring SAP systems.

  2. Managing user access and authorizations to ensure security.

  3. Monitoring system health and performance to prevent downtime.

  4. Managing transports to move changes from development to production environments.

  5. Performing upgrades and applying patches to keep systems up to date.

  6. Integrating SAP with other systems using RFC (Remote Function Call) and other interfaces.

  7. Handling backups, restores, and disaster recovery to protect business data.

  8. Supporting database and OS-level operations for SAP environments.

Key Features of SAP Basis

  1. SAP System Installation & Configuration

    • Setting up new SAP systems (ECC, S/4HANA, BW, etc.) and configuring them to meet business needs.

  2. Client Administration

    • Creating, copying, deleting, and maintaining SAP clients for different business purposes.

  3. User & Authorization Management

    • Managing user IDs, roles, and permissions to ensure data security.

  4. Transport Management System (TMS)

    • Moving configuration changes and developments between SAP landscapes (Dev → QA → Prod).

  5. System Monitoring & Health Checks

    • Using transaction codes and monitoring tools to track system performance and prevent issues.

  6. Background Job Scheduling

    • Automating processes like data uploads, reports, or batch programs.

  7. Kernel & Patch Upgrades

    • Applying system updates for new features, bug fixes, and security patches.

  8. RFC & Connectivity Management

    • Setting up connections for data exchange between SAP systems or with external systems.

  9. Database Administration Support

    • Monitoring and tuning the SAP database (including HANA) for performance.

  10. Performance Tuning

    • Optimizing memory usage, database queries, and response times.

  11. Disaster Recovery & Backup Management

    • Ensuring business continuity by managing data backups and recovery processes.

  12. S/4HANA Administration

    • Performing HANA-specific tasks like memory management, delta merges, and system upgrades.

What is SAP Basis Administration with S/4HANA?

SAP Basis Administration is the technical administration of SAP systems — covering installation, configuration, user management, performance monitoring, upgrades, and troubleshooting.

When we say “with S/4HANA”, it means that this administration is being done on SAP’s next-generation ERP platform — SAP S/4HANA — which runs exclusively on the high-performance SAP HANA in-memory database.

In other words:

  • Traditional SAP Basis administrators managed SAP ERP systems running on various databases like Oracle, MS SQL, or DB2.

  • SAP Basis with S/4HANA administrators manage modern SAP systems that run on HANA and take advantage of its speed, advanced analytics, and simplified data model.

Why It’s Different from Traditional SAP Basis

  1. HANA-Specific Administration Skills

    • You need to understand HANA database administration, memory management, delta merges, and in-memory optimization.

  2. New Tools and Interfaces

    • Use of HANA Studio, HANA Cockpit, and Fiori-based administration apps instead of only SAP GUI.

  3. Upgrades and Migrations

    • Knowledge of S/4HANA version upgrades and migration from ECC to S/4HANA.

  4. Performance Tuning on HANA

    • Different tuning methods compared to traditional databases because HANA is columnar and in-memory.

Key Responsibilities of an SAP Basis Administrator in an S/4HANA Environment

  • System Installation & Configuration for S/4HANA environments.

  • HANA Database Administration (monitoring, backups, recovery, memory optimization).

  • System Performance Monitoring using HANA Cockpit and Solution Manager.

  • S/4HANA Upgrades & Patching for both application and database layers.

  • User, Role & Authorization Management for Fiori and SAP GUI users.

  • Transport Management in an S/4HANA landscape.

  • RFC Connections & Integration Setup for cloud and hybrid environments.

  • Disaster Recovery & High Availability setup for HANA-based systems.

  • Daily Health Checks (CPU, memory, disk, jobs, database health).

Key Features / Skills Gained in SAP Basis with S/4HANA

  1. End-to-End S/4HANA Installation (application + database).

  2. HANA Studio & HANA Cockpit Administration.

  3. Memory Management & Delta Merge Optimization.

  4. S/4HANA Version Upgrade & Migration.

  5. Kernel & Patch Management for HANA systems.

  6. Transport Management System (TMS) in HANA.

  7. High Availability & Disaster Recovery for HANA.

  8. Performance Tuning in S/4HANA environments.

  9. Daily Health Checks and Monitoring Transactions.
