Note: This course is an audio and video on my notes about the Sankhya Karika. It's in Sanskrit and English language. So knowing both the languages is important to understand this course. If you know only English then you will still understand 75 percent of the video with repeated listening. Please keep this in mind before buying the course. I have yet to see such an all round perspective on Sankhya on any virtual platform so far. A good understanding of Sanskrit will help the viewer to understand Sankhya Philosophy in totality. A lot of effort has gone into making the material simple without losing the essence of the text. Watching the video repeatedly and contemplating on one video/ Karika/Shloka everyday will help make the concept clearer and clearer.
All the 73 Karikas are covered in the video plus a story format of Sankhya is uploaded too. PDF of the notes is given in the resources too. Happy learning.
Understanding Sankhya Philosophy helps one get a deeper understanding of Sage Patanjali’s Yogasutras as they share the same Metaphysical base. Sankhya is the theory of Yoga and Yoga is the practical aspect of Sankhya. A strong foundation of Sankhya helps grasp the Yogasutras in totality.
Sankhya of Sage Kapila
Sage Kapila is the founder of this system. Sankhya sutra of Kapila is lost in time.
Ishvarakrishna - Sankhya karika,
Gaudapada - Sankhya-karika-bhashya,
Vachaspati Misra - Tattva-Kaumudi,
Vijnana Bhiksu - Sankhya-pravachana-bhasya
are the important texts on this Philosophy.
Prakriti and Purusha are the two fundamental realities.
Prakriti = the unity of the 3 Gunas held in equilibrium - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. These three Gunas are the constituents of Prakriti and through it the worldly objects. These three gunas cannot be perceived and so their existence is inferred from their effect. These qualities themselves have other qualities. For example, Sattva = lightness, Rajas = activity, Tamas = heaviness.
The three gunas which constitute Prakrti conflict and yet co-operate with one another and are always found intermingled. They are compared to Oil, Wick and the Flame - though opposed, yet co-operate to produce the light of a lamp.
Change is of two kinds: [1] Sarupa, At the time of pralaya, Gunas change homogeniously [Sarupa]- Sattva into Sattva, Rajas into Rajas, and Tamas into Tamas.
[2] Virupa.: Evolution starts when there is heterogeneous change in the gunas and one predominates the other.
There are 73 Karikas that explains this evolution and methods are mentioned that help us to move towards liberation.

This course will help you understand the Sankhya/Samkhya Philosophy of Evolution. The Sankhya Philosophy is the backbone of Yoga Philosophy of Sage Patanjali. Sankhya is the theory aspect of Yoga and Yoga is the practical aspect of Sankhya. There are 73 Karikas/Shlokas that are tackled in this course in a notes reading format. The notes give both the Philosophical perspective as well as Sanskrit perspective of the Shloka. It helps one to know Matter and Consciousness, Gunas and the Evolution process by understanding the Karikas which in turn helps us to understand the Yogasutras.
This course is made after studying this text for almost a decade. It is really a boon to reach these notes across to anyone who wants to read and understand it. With technology - space and time is no more an obstacle. Yet, I truly believe that this text chooses us and not the other way around because one has to be eligible to receive the knowledge.
The eligibility to buy this course is love for Yoga and Sankhya, ability to read or hear Sanskrit and lots of Patience to go through the 73 Karikas again and again. The Sankhya notes are here, are you ready for the same?
