Explore Salesforce lightning reports and dashboards, the newer interface, and set up your personal environment with a developer edition org, optional 200 account imports, and assignment files with bonus prompts.
Sign up for a developer edition of the Salesforce org, as Microsoft Office 365 emails may fail verification due to Safe Links; use a Gmail address to simplify signup.
If you don't have access to a Salesforce environment OR would like to follow along, then register for a free Salesforce Developer org. This lecture walks through the signup steps.
Now that you have your own Salesforce environment, improve your course experience by importing an additional 200 records (using the linked data import file).
Before diving in, let's clarify how Salesforce reports work & what they're capable of
Explore how Salesforce reports sit between list views and dashboards, with list views offering filtered records and charts but no export or subscription, while dashboards consolidate reports for data visualization.
Here's how to locate the reports section of Salesforce
Learn how to choose a report type to open the Lightning Report Builder
The Filter Pane in the report builder is where you set the logic (criteria) that determines which records appear in your report
The Outline Pane in the report builder is where you determine which fields (columns) appear in the layout of your report. It's also where you set summary calcs for the top of the report results page.
The Preview Pane in the report builder is where you can sort and preview a small sample of your results
Save and run a Salesforce Lightning report, name and describe it, and choose a folder for access. Then review results, including the total and max amounts and the 18 opportunities.
Choose report type, use the filter, outline, and preview panes to set criteria, fields, and sort results, then save with description in a folder, noting private reports can't be shared.
Explore four kinds of Salesforce reports: tabular for simple lists, summary with subtotals, matrix for multi-dimensional data, and joined blocks. Remember most reports are summary.
Build a tabular report of the top ten accounts by annual revenue, including key fields, apply a ten-row limit, and show sum and max revenue.
Practice building a summary report by grouping accounts by industry, converting a tabular report into a summary view with row grouping, sorting by record count, and viewing subtotals.
Add a donut chart to a grouped report, set the chart title, display the record counts, and use wedge hover to see details and filter results; optionally show percentages.
Build a summary report using bucketing to group industries into science and technology, business, and social good, with bucket columns, row groupings, and donut chart subtotals.
Review the bonus assignment by building a california accounts report in the standard accounts report type, grouped by priority, with a funnel chart showing total and average annual revenue.
Build matrix reports with row and column groupings to reveal the rating spread across industry buckets. Switch between stacked bar charts and interactive filtering to view underlying records.
Create a matrix report filtered to the Northeast, group by state, and bucket annual revenue into less than 250,000, 250,000–500,000, or above 500,000, presented with a stacked column chart.
Master joined reports by building a two-block report linking accounts and opportunities, grouped by account name, with filters and columns, and run, save, and leverage charts in dashboards.
Explore the limitations of joined reports in Salesforce, compare with summary and matrix layouts, and consult the Salesforce Help site for the latest guidance.
Review assignment 3 by building an opportunities report that filters open opportunities, buckets probability into three bands, and groups by lead source and probability, displaying row counts and total amounts.
Explore bucket columns in Salesforce reports to categorize text values into buckets and define numeric ranges, using the two interfaces to create temporary fields that appear as simple report columns.
Use the unique count feature on the email column in a contacts tabular report. This helps count distinct emails, reveal missing addresses, and flag duplicates for a clean marketing list.
Apply conditional formatting in Salesforce reports to highlight subtotals by industry when the annual revenue sum exceeds five million, using yellow highlighting.
Learn to group date fields in Salesforce reports, using the close date to create calendar month groupings and time-based charts, including matrix reports for rows and columns.
Master the report run page to interact with Salesforce reports, adjusting filters, refreshing results, and sorting. Subscribe, export, add contacts and accounts to a campaign, and add reports to dashboards.
Master filter logic in Salesforce reports by using the filter pane, and/or operators, and relative dates to show either closed won opportunities or dates on or before last month.
Discover how cross filters in Salesforce reports show accounts with open cases by filtering on related case data, including case status, using the accounts report type.
Explore Salesforce report formulas, including summary and row level formulas, to transform annual revenue data with case logic, currency output, and rating-based multipliers.
Each widget displays data from a single report, and Salesforce dashboards can combine data from multiple reports with charts and static widgets like rich text and images.
Learn to build a Salesforce dashboard from an accounts by industry report, adding a donut chart widget, summarizing annual revenue, and configuring sorting, legend, and display options.
Explore the new dashboard widget options in the builder, including chart, table, text with rich formatting, and image widgets you can upload or choose from the Salesforce gallery for logos.
Add tables and stacked charts to a Salesforce dashboard to show the top ten accounts by annual revenue with a full-number format and a bottom totals row.
Show how to add a line graph to display opportunities over time by closed date, and recreate a cumulative line chart to compare monthly totals within the same source report.
Learn how to configure Salesforce dashboard widgets, resize and move charts on the dashboard canvas, set display, values, slicing, decimals, sort order, legend position, and light or dark modes.
Open dashboard properties to switch light or dark modes, choose color palettes and grid size, control how users view data (as themselves, as you, or as another person), save copies.
Define a dashboard filter from the account rating field and apply hot or hot and warm to update all chart widgets.
Interact with Salesforce dashboards by applying filters, expanding widgets, and opening filtered reports. Download dashboard images, view reports, and set up subscriptions by time of day and days of week.
Organize Salesforce reports and dashboards with public and private folders, share access with individuals or groups, and set view, edit, or manage permissions for users.
Practice with Trailhead to gain hands-on experience with Salesforce reports and dashboards. Explore modules, quizzes, and recording projects to reinforce learning, earn badges, and build momentum.
Discover how Salesforce reports and dashboards improve with every quarterly release, and learn to review the release notes; features may require admin testing or enabling, and are organized by category.
