Description

Let's dive deeper into how SAP S/4HANA integrates with the CO-PA (Controlling Profitability Analysis) planning process, emphasizing the Sales and Operations Planning (SOP) through the production process.

1. Sales and Operations Planning (SOP):

SOP is an integrated, forward-looking process designed to balance demand and supply while aligning daily operations with corporate strategy. It's a bridge between strategic planning and detailed planning processes:

  • Material Master Preparation: A detailed record of every item/material in the SAP system. It provides crucial attributes like material type, procurement type, costing data, and so forth.

  • Bill of Material (BOM) Design: A comprehensive list of components required to produce an item. BOM provides a recipe for production and services.

  • Work Center Creation: Represents a machine or group of machines where production operations are performed. It contains data related to capacity, scheduling, and costing.

  • Routing Design: It provides a detailed sequence of operations required to produce an item. Along with BOM, it forms the foundation for production planning and execution.

  • Transfer Plan to SOP: Demand plans are transferred to SOP, setting the stage for detailed planning. Here, the anticipated sales volumes are translated into feasible production plans.

  • Change Sales Plan to Production Plan: Sales plans are adjusted and translated into actionable production schedules.

2. From SOP to Demand Management:

  • Transfer Planning Data to Demand Management: Post-SOP, the data is moved to demand management, which handles detailed production quantities and dates.

  • Create Planning Scenario: Represents a version of the production plan, allowing planners to simulate different production scenarios.

  • Long-Term MRP Planning Scenario: Used to anticipate future material requirements based on long-term sales and production plans.

  • Transfer Planned Activity Requirements for Production: This is where you push the planned data to work centers for production.

3. Production and Costing:

  • Planned Activity Reconciliation: Ensures that planned activities are in line with actual production activities. Discrepancies are highlighted for action.

  • Cost Element/Activity Input Planning: This captures the anticipated cost for various production activities.

  • Plan Activity Price Calculation: Here, the system computes the planned activity rate based on cost and activity quantities.

  • Standard Cost Estimation and Release: It determines the standard cost of producing goods and services.

  • Update Standard Cost Result in CO-PA (KEPM Framework): The computed standard costs are updated in CO-PA to provide a profitability perspective.

  • Planned Order Creation: Represents the plan to produce a certain quantity of a product at a particular time.

  • Convert Planned Order to Production Order: Translates the plan into an actionable production order, which dictates the production activities.

  • Goods Issue, Activity Confirmation, and Goods Receipt with respect to Manufacturing Order: As production progresses, materials are issued, activities are confirmed, and finished goods are received, all of which have financial implications.

  • Variance Calculation and Settlement of Manufacturing Order: At the end of production, the system calculates the variance between the planned and actual costs.

Conclusion:

SAP S/4HANA's integration between CO-PA planning and SOP ensures that the profitability perspective is always considered throughout the operational planning and execution processes. By doing so, it aligns the company's operations with its financial objectives, ensuring profitability is at the forefront of operational decisions.
